Summary

The lady, called by her intimate friends Nita, stopped at the end of the crowded path which leads to the bandstand.
“Mary, I do not think you need come any farther. Take a park chair and wait for me. I may be an hour—I may be longer. If you see me with—with the gentleman, you will not recognise me by a sign.”
“Yes, mademoiselle.”
“If you think I am being followed, then you may warn me. But I do not think that is likely. M. Goucouldis has no idea that—er—the Prince has any entanglements. But if it should be so that I am watched, then very likely his—agents—will try to get into touch with you. In that case you will tell them that I am Mademoiselle Lemair from Paris. That I am the daughter of M. Lemair, the leader of the Popular Party of Sergovia. If your questioner has a fit at this, send for a policeman: I understand that the English police are trained in first aid.”

Twenty generations ago, the Sun burnt the Earth. Men have been walled in ever since. Until a kid finds the truth.
In a world where sunlight is forbidden and truth is heresy, one young man’s curiosity will either liberate humanity – or destroy everything he loves.
For twenty generations, humanity has hidden in viewless corridors, told that the Sun above has burned all life from the Earth. Boz has never questioned the Tenets that govern every aspect of their existence – until he meets Mozart the Heretic, whose disfigured face tells a different story about what really happened to those who sought the truth.
When Mozart reveals that the surface world still thrives in secret paradise, Boz faces an impossible choice: remain safely ignorant in his prison, or risk everything to discover what lies beyond the forbidden exits. Driven by his love for Flox, a remarkable young woman from the violent outer corridors, Boz embarks on a perilous journey through pitch-black tunnels toward the mythical ‘Land of Without’ for a mission as yet unknown to him.
What he finds shatters everything he believed. The surface world is not only habitable but beautiful – a garden paradise where the privileged few enjoy nature’s bounty while millions remain trapped below in ignorance. But when Boz learns the true, appalling content of his mission outside, he must choose between the liberation of his people and the virginity of his own conscience. In a world where every freedom demands a sacrifice, how do you choose between love and justice – especially when you’re no longer sure which is which?

Another riveting tale from Georges Simenon, in which two siblings, living in isolation, are suspects in a tale of deception, theft, and murder. It’s been seventeen hours of interrogation, yet Carl Andersen’s air of elegance remains unruffled. Inspector Maigret is bewildered by the behavior exhibited by the only probable suspect of the case at Three Widows Crossroads, the location of Carl’s isolated mansion where he lives with his sister Else. The Saturday evening prior, Carl and Else go to sleep, after Carl has locked her away in her bedroom as usual—a curious habit, notes Maigret, but stranger things soon arise. Carl’s faraway neighbor Monsieur Michonnet discovers that his flashy new automobile has swapped places with Carl’s run-down vehicle; what’s more, in the front seat of Michonnet’s car sits a dead man, a Belgian diamond merchant no one purports to know, shot point-blank in the chest. Hours later, Carl and Else are caught trying to embark on a train to Paris. It’s bizarre business, but Maigret is determined to shake off the unease and find out what the residents of Three Widows Crossroads are covering up in The Night at the Crossroads, an exciting, unnerving story from the inimitable Georges Simenon.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux

"Casemate has a long history of publishing high quality military history non-fiction. Lately, they have expanded their range of work to include well written novels using wartime settings." – WWII History MagazineRe-deployed from convoys in the Atlantic, the men of PC-450 must face Japanese submarines and air attacks as they support the U.S. Marines island-hopping across the Pacific.Twice torpedoed during the Battle of the Atlantic, LT. Tony Colombo USNR, a former merchant marine officer, is appointed to command a new Navy ship, PC-450, a 173 foot, steel-hulled and much advanced submarine chaser carrying five officers and sixty-five men. After a period of escorting convoys up and down the Atlantic coast, Tony suddenly finds himself escorting ships loaded with Marine Corps equipment all the way to Wellington, New Zealand and then to Brisbane, Australia. Once arrived, he is instantly ordered to begin escorting small convoys up and down the Australian coast. Some weeks later, Tony and PC-450 engage in battle with a dangerous Japanese midget submarine which is attempting to penetrate Brisbane Harbor. In the summer of 1942, as PC-450 begins to escort numerous convoys from Australia to Noumea in New Caledonia, the United States suddenly invades Guadalcanal with the result that Tony begins guiding convoys north in support of the invasion while fending off the multiple day and night air raids that the Japanese throw down The Slot. Subsequently, following the hard fought victory on Guadalcanal, PC-450 participates in the invasion of the Russell Islands and then, during the grinding fight for New Georgia, PC-450 not only helps to fend off Japanese air attacks on the fleet but twice engages in surface actions when the Japanese attempt to infiltrate troops onto the island. Wounded in a sudden air attack that radar could not detect in advance, Tony and Baldy are returned to Brisbane for convalescence and new assignments.
