Francis Bret Harte was born on 25th August 1836 in Albany New York.

As a young boy Harte developed an early love of books and reading. He first published at the tender age of 11, his satirical poem ‘Autumn Musings’. Expecting praise he received anything but and later wrote "Such a shock was their ridicule to me that I wonder that I ever wrote another line of verse."

By age 13 his formal education was at an end and four years later the family moved to California. Here the young man worked in a variety of capacities; miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist.

But it was also here that he found the stories and inspiration for the works that would seal his fame across the literary world. He was instrumental in propelling the short story genre forward and brought tales of the Old West and the Gold Rush to a greater audience. At the height of his fame he would entertain staggering monetary offers to write for monthly magazines.

His talents extended to poetry, plays, lectures, book reviews, editorials, and magazine sketches. As he moved location, initially east to New York and then through Consular appointments to Europe and finally England his audience diminished but he continued to experiment, to write and to publish.

Bret Harte died of throat cancer on May 5th 1902 and is buried in St Peter’s Church in Frimley, Surrey, England.

But when their most controversial member, wealthy socialite Beatrice Worthington, collapses dead after sipping poisoned tea, retired librarian and book club founder Agnes Merryweather knows this was no accident. With the police baffled by a complete lack of evidence and every club member hiding secrets, Agnes decides to do what she does best: research the crime. Using her literary knowledge and keen understanding of human nature gained from decades of reading, Agnes notices clues others miss—a book out of place, a dog-eared page that shouldn't be there, a literary quote that feels more like a threat. Teaming up with the charming new bookstore owner and her fellow book club members, Agnes discovers that Beatrice's death is connected to a decades-old scandal buried in the town's history. But as she gets closer to the truth, the killer sends a chilling message by leaving a bloody bookmark in her favorite novel...

Lily’s heart is tugged by the strings of memories, having spent so much of her own childhood along the beaches there with family and friends. Having believed for years that she was content with the fragile peace she’d made with the past, Lily is as surprised as any when she begins to question whether she wants to return to her life in California. Maybe you can go home again.

A chance meeting on a moonlit Havana night.
An alluring Cuban pilot and a young American soldier.
Can they outrun the threat of nuclear war?
Lieutenant Charlie Parnell grinds through his daily routine in Army Intelligence at Arlington Hall Station, Virginia. He tracks Cuban movements through Havana newspapers and Cuban radio, but what he’s counting are the dreary days until his military discharge. When the colonel calls him up to the command post one day, the last people Charlie expects to meet are two suits from the CIA. Sure, Charlie’s a gutsy street-smart guy who speaks fluent Spanish and has debriefed his fair share of Cuban refugees, but he’s mostly a pencil pusher with a limp that’s kept him out of the field. What could the nation’s spy organization want with him?
As the scheme to unseat Fidel Castro unfolds, Charlie finds the plot runs deeper than the CIA has led him to believe. After the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion, strategic placement of ballistic missiles has heightened the threat of nuclear war, and Charlie fears he’ll end up in the danger zone with only one extremely risky escape route.
Skeptical of his CIA handlers, Charlie devises a backup plan. There’s a steep cost to that too, but it’s a gamble that could play out to his advantage in the end. Everything is on track until he meets an attractive Cuban pilot and her daughter. Before any of them know it, they’re running for their lives.
