From an "exquisite" (The New Yorker) writer, a searing volume of prizewinning stories starring women facing points of no return.A professor finds a photograph of her deceased mother in a compromising position on the wall of a museum. A twenty-something's lucrative remote work sparks paranoia and bigotry. A transplant to a new city must make a choice about who she trusts when her partner reveals a violent history. The summer after her divorce from an older man, an exiled painter's former friends grapple with rumors that she attempted to pass as a teenager. In this long-awaited debut collection, Kathleen Alcott turns her skills as a stylist on the unfreedoms of American life—as well as the guilt that stalks those who survive them. Emergency roams from European cities to scorched California towns, drug-smeared motel rooms to polished dinner parties, taking taut, surprising portraits of addiction, love, misogyny, and sexual power. Confronting the hidden perils of class ascension, the women in these stories try to pay down the psychic debts of their old lives as they search for a new happiness they can afford.

An intrepid reporter boards the Lusitania in a “vivid . . . ripping good” spy thriller from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author (The Wall Street Journal).   It’s 1915, World War I is in full swing, and foreign correspondent Christopher “Kit” Marlowe Cobb is tasked with following a German intellectual and possible secret service agent who’s just boarded the British ocean liner Lusitania. But Cobb is soon distracted from his mission by the sultry Selene Bourgani, a world-renowned silent film star who also appears to be working with German Intelligence. The secrets Selene harbors have the potential to set the whole international conflict further aflame—and they’re about to be ignited by a German U-boat attack off the Irish coast.   From the perilous waters of the Atlantic, Cobb tails Selene into London’s darkest alleyways, then on to the powder keg that is Istanbul. Across the war-torn stages of Europe and the Middle East, Cobb must venture deep behind enemy lines, knowing full well he may not return.   The second book in the Christopher Marlowe Cobb Thrillers, The Star of Istanbul “has it all: history galore, exotic foreign settings, a world-weary yet engaging protagonist, villains in abundance and a romance worthy of Bogart and Bergman” (BookPage).   “[An] outstanding work of historical fiction.” —The Huntington News   “Butler . . . holds the reader transfixed, like a kid at a Saturday matinee.” —Booklist, starred review   “An exciting thriller with plenty of action, romance, and danger . . . [a] fast-paced journey through a world at war.” —Library Journal

Mark Twain is one of the greatest American writers of all times. Sometimes he is even called “the father of American literature”. Millions of adults and children all over the globe still read and love his books. Tales are written in a very special witty manner. The most famous writings are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These writings are real masterpieces, but there are also plenty of short stories by Mark Twain, which are worthwhile. One of these tales is "The Danger of Lying in Bed". This is a story of quite logical reasoning and really unexpected conclusions. Have you ever seen the statistics of deaths in railroad disasters and just in beds at home? Then read this funny and amusing story of a man, who conducted a whole investigation on the issue. Poor people have no idea how dangerous it is to trust those deadly beds. The language of the story is very expressive and sarcastic. You can’t help smiling at the reasoning of the main character. Spend five minutes to learn the writing and figure out, whether it is so riskily to sleep in your bed.A SmartTouch Media production.
