The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter, one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 12 stories in the cycle collected as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. The story was originally serialised in Strand Magazine in 1893. This story introduces Holmes's elder brother Mycroft. Doyle ranked "The Greek Interpreter" seventeenth in a list of his nineteen favourite Sherlock Holmes stories. The third episode of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is based upon "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton", but the beginning has a meeting between the heroes and Mycroft, with the scene being adapted from the story. The billiard-maker they analyze through the window turns out, unknown to them, to be Milverton's informer and Moriarty's henchman. The story was adapted for television in 1985 as part of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series, starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes, David Burke as Dr. Watson and Charles Gray as Mycroft Holmes. The episode is largely faithful to the original short story, but certain changes are made; in particular, Kratides is eventually compelled to sign the paper and the ending is amended to have Holmes, Watson and Mycroft confront the villains on board a train as they attempt to escape to Greece, during which Latimer is killed as he attempts to escape and both Kemp and Sophia are taken into custody.Famous works of the author Arthur Conan Doyle: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, Stories of Sherlock Holmes, The Lost World.

In Dead Souls, Nikolai Gogol crafts a brilliant satirical portrait of 19th-century Russian society. The novel follows the mysterious and cunning Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov as he travels from town to town, attempting to buy the ownership rights to dead serfs in order to gain wealth and status through a bizarre loophole in the Russian system.Through absurdity, irony, and vivid characterization, Gogol exposes the moral decay and bureaucratic nonsense of imperial Russia. At once comedic and deeply philosophical, Dead Souls is considered one of the great masterpieces of Russian literature, a novel that is as relevant and haunting today as it was in Gogol's time.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

George is heartbroken after the death of his lover, Jim.
A professor of English in sunny, suburban California, George grieves in solitude, surrounded by easy-going, uncomprehending youth. Beneath his British restraint, waves of sorrow and anger surge. He doggedly persists with the routines of his past life, heading out to work, to the gym, on again to dinner. From his solitude springs defiance; he will triumph over loneliness and alienation, he will find love again, he will feel joy.
Isherwood’s short, poignant novel, long recognized as a masterpiece, is a founding work of contemporary gay literature. Alex Jennings, in this celebrated performance, captures every nuance.
