Sinossi

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Charlie Chan, a heroic detective created by Earl Derr Biggers to the delight of mystery lovers

American novelist and playwright Earl Derr Biggers had always been interested in mystery fiction, but his interest in Hawaii clearly stems from a 1919 vacation in Honolulu. While there, he read a newspaper article on a Chinese detective named Chang Apana. Apana would become the model for Charlie Chan in Biggers' 1925 novel, "The House Without a Key," and there quickly followed five more Charlie Chan novels.
"The House Without a Key," which takes place in 1920s Hawaii, spends time acquainting the reader with the look and feel of the islands of that era from the standpoint of both white and non-white inhabitants, and describes social class structures and customs which have largely vanished in the 21st century.
"The House Without a Key" deals with the murder of a former member of Boston society who has lived in Hawaii for a number of years. The main character is the victim's nephew, a strait-laced young Bostonian bond trader, who came to the islands to try to convince his aunt Minerva, whose vacation has extended many months, to return to Boston. The nephew, John Quincy Winterslip, soon falls under the spell of the islands himself, meets an attractive young woman, breaks his engagement to his strait-laced Bostonian fiancée Agatha, and decides after the murder is solved to move to San Francisco. In the interval, he is introduced to many levels of Hawaiian society and is of some assistance to Detective Charlie Chan in solving the mystery.
"The House Without a Key" was adapted for film twice, as “The House Without a Key” in 1926 and as “Charlie Chan's Greatest Case” in 1933.

There are three sides to every story
    Yours. Theirs.
    And the Truth.
Michael Brady is back. The Edge of Truth is the fifth book in the series. And there’s a ghost from Brady’s past…

The push that sent Diane Macdonald over the cliff edge was surprisingly gentle.
She was walking her dog on the cliff top. Runswick Bay, a few miles north of Whitby.
Thirty-six hours later her body is found at the bottom of the cliff.
    Brady’s convinced it’s murder.
    But there’s no evidence.
    And only one witness.
Gerry Donoghue, a homeless ex-veteran. A man with a deep, dark secret.
    And now he’s disappeared.
Leaving Brady with Diane’s husband, Graham Macdonald – the ghost from Brady’s past.

Twenty-five years later and Macdonald is an MP.
And a good friend of Brady’s boss, Kershaw.
So there’s pressure. Plenty of pressure.
And Michael Brady’s not dealing with it very well.
He starts to make increasingly rash decisions – putting his personal and his professional relationships at risk.

But you know Brady by now.
    He won’t let it go.
    He can’t let it go…

It's an author's job to create a new world in the pages of a book. But when lines start to blur and reality begins to fade, getting lost in a story can be dangerous—especially if you can't find your way back...

Madeleine d'Leon doesn't know where Edward came from. He is simply a character in her next book. But as she writes, he becomes all she can think about. His charm, his dark hair, his pen scratching out his latest literary novel...

Edward McGinnity can't get Madeleine out of his mind—softly smiling, infectiously enthusiastic, and perfectly damaged. She will be the ideal heroine for his next book.

But who is the author and who is the creation? And as the lines start to blur, who is affected when a killer finally takes flesh?

After She Wrote Him is a piece of meta-fiction with a wildly inventive twist on the murder mystery that takes readers on a journey filled with passion, obsession, and the emptiness left behind when the real world starts to fall away
