१९८६ साली प्रसिद्ध झालेली पहिली आवृत्ती संपून गेल्यामुळे बरीच वर्षे हा ग्रंथ वाचकांना उपलब्ध नव्हता. दरम्यानच्या काळात डॉ. गोडबोले यांना पंजाबात प्रवास करण्याची संधी लाभली व विषयाचा अधिक अभ्यास त्यांना करता आला. त्यामुळे मूळ ग्रंथात बरीच नवी भर ते घालू शकले.या ग्रंथाचा विषय आपल्या राष्ट्राच्या जिव्हाळ्याचा असून त्यासंबंधीचा खरा इतिहास पुराव्यासहित पुढे येणे महत्त्वाचे आहे. डॉ. गोडबोले यांनी कोणत्याही पूर्वग्रहाला बळी न पडता किंवा अभिनिवेशाच्या आहारी न जाता चिकित्सक बुद्धीने आणि साधार गुरू नानक ते गुरू गोविंदसिंग या सुमारे अडीचशे वर्षांचा शीख इतिहासाचा आलेख वाचकांना सादर केला आहे. पंचनदाची भूमी आणि या भूमीवरील गुरू नानकपूर्व इस्लामी आक्रमणे यांचाही धावता इतिहास त्यांनी कथन केला आहे. इस्लामी आक्रमणाच्या हिंस्त्र आणि धर्माध स्वरूपाची काहीशी कल्पना त्यामुळे येते आणि शीख पंथाने बजावलेल्या ऐतिहासिक कामगिरीचे महत्त्व मनावर बिंबते.
