Sinossi

An “impressively researched and useful study” of the golden age of radio and its role in American democracy (Journal of American History).

In Fireside Politics, Douglas B. Craig provides the first detailed and complete examination of radio’s changing role in American political culture between 1920 and 1940—the medium’s golden age, when it commanded huge national audiences without competition from television.

Craig follows the evolution of radio into a commercialized, networked, and regulated industry, and ultimately into an essential tool for winning political campaigns and shaping American identity in the interwar period. Finally, he draws thoughtful comparisons of the American experience of radio broadcasting and political culture with those of Australia, Britain, and Canada.

“The best general study yet published on the development of radio broadcasting during this crucial period when key institutional and social patterns were established.” ?Technology and Culture

British music industry veteran David Stark grew up in north-west London during the 1960s as a dedicated Beatles fan, who was lucky enough to meet his musical heroes on various memorable occasions. From gatecrashing the Yellow Submarine film premiere in 1968 and sitting right behind them, to meeting the group individually in some extraordinary circumstances, he recalls his many Beatles encounters here for the first time. However, Stark’s stories don’t end with the ’60s, as he continued to encounter all the solo Beatles into the ’70s and beyond, culminating in 2006 with Sir Paul McCartney inducting him as a ‘Companion of LIPA’ for his work with songwriting students, which he still does. You’ll also learn about his career as record promoter; music trade editor and publisher; Blue Plaque initiator; and life-long drummer, among his many other achievements.
    SPECIAL FEATURES:
    1) Two forewords, written and read by Richard Buskin and Lesley-Ann Jones, two close friends of Stark's who are both acclaimed best-selling authors in their own right:
    2) Part of an exclusive interview with John Lennon's best friend and former member of The Quarrymen, Pete Shotton (1941-2017). In 1983 Stark spoke at length with Shotton, who is heard here for the first time in his own words. This includes him talking about his reaction to Lennon's murder in December 1980, and rushing to George Harrison's house in Henley-on-Thames that same morning.
    3) Beatles tribute song 'Gold Songs' recorded by Fab Gear (vocals: Ben Champniss). Music & lyrics written by David Stark, who also plays drums on it and is co-producer. This special homage to The Beatles appears at the end of the audiobook, while a short section of the intro also opens it. (A video montage can also be found at YouTube).

“Stanton’s analysis of radio as a new tool of the colonial state contributes a great deal to studies of Mandate Palestine and imperialism.” –Journal of Palestinian Studies   Modeled after the BBC, the Palestine Broadcasting Service was launched in 1936 to serve as the national radio station of Mandate Palestine, playing a pivotal role in shaping the culture of the emerging middle class in the region. Despite its significance, the PBS has become nearly forgotten by scholars of twentieth-century Middle Eastern studies. Drawn extensively from British and Israeli archival sources, “This Is Jerusalem Calling” traces the compelling history of the PBS’s twelve years of operation, illuminating crucial aspects of a period when Jewish and Arab national movements simultaneously took form.   Andrea L. Stanton describes the ways in which the mandate government used broadcasting to cater to varied audiences, including rural Arab listeners, in an attempt to promote a “modern” vision of Arab Palestine as an urbane, politically sophisticated region. In addition to programming designed for the education of the peasantry, religious broadcasting was created to appeal to all three main faith communities in Palestine, which ultimately may have had a disintegrating, separatist effect. Stanton’s research brings to light the manifestation of Britain’s attempts to prepare its mandate state for self-governance while supporting the aims of Zionists. While the PBS did not create the conflict between Arab Palestinians and Zionists, the service reflected, articulated, and magnified such tensions during an era when radio broadcasting was becoming a key communication tool for emerging national identities around the globe.

Everyone loved Lucy, the scheming, madcap redhead who ruled television for more than twenty years. In life, however, Lucille Ball presented a far more complex and contradictory personality than was ever embodied by the television Lucy. In Lucille: The Life of Lucille Ball Kathleen Brady presents the actress as a fully rounded human being, often at odds with the image she presented as an entertainment icon. Brady has gone far beyond the typical celebrity biography to present a funny, unflinching and ultimately moving portrait of Lucille Ball as a performing artist, daughter, mother, friend, colleague, and television mogul. Many think they know the story of Lucille Ball’s life, but Brady provides new details and a fresh perspective on this complex woman through a wealth of anecdotes and firsthand accounts.   Lucille Ball is revealed not only as a television archetype and influential icon of postwar American culture, but as a driven yet fragile human being who spent her life struggling to create of life of normalcy, but ultimately failed—even as she succeeded in bringing laughter of millions of fans.   In researching Lucille, Brady interviewed more than 150 people from her hometown to Hollywood. She spoke with her grade school classmates, and those like Katherine Hepburn and Ginger Rodgers who met her when she arrived in Hollywood in the 1930s. She gained insights from those who knew her before her fame and from those she loved throughout her life. Film, radio and television history come to life with the appearances on these pages of such greats as The Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton, Louis B. Mayer, and of course Desi Arnaz, who march and pratfall through the pages of this outstanding biography.
