Sinossi

Role Model Pages explores the significant role of LGBTQ representation in fictional narratives, particularly graphic depictions, and their influence on identity formation and social perceptions. It examines how these characters function as role models within reader communities, impacting individuals' self-discovery and contributing to broader social change. The book highlights that while early portrayals of LGBTQ figures often relied on stereotypes, more recent works showcase greater diversity, offering readers a wider range of figures for identification and inspiration. The book uniquely focuses on the psychological impact of these representations, using textual analysis, reception studies, and social psychological research to understand how fictional characters are interpreted and utilized. It reveals that graphic depictions can be powerful tools for self-acceptance and community building, yet also acknowledges the potential for misrepresentation. For instance, the book studies how fan fiction and online forums serve as spaces for readers to negotiate meanings and build communities. Divided into three sections, Role Model Pages first introduces core concepts before delving into case studies across various media, like comics and video games. Finally, it explores practical applications for educators and content creators, aiming to promote positive and authentic portrayals. This approach offers a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between fiction and reality, making it valuable for anyone interested in psychology, media studies, and LGBTQ studies.

Discover the history of Ancient Iran that spans from Iran’s mysterious origins to the Islamic conquest.
Ancient Persia conjures images of extravagant palaces, beautiful gardens, mighty armies, and all-powerful kings, queens, and princes. The beginnings of Iranian antiquity are enigmatic, but from the cradle of the western Zagros Mountains came the greatest empires the world has ever known. The Elamites, Medians, Achaemenids, Parthians, and Sassanids all sprang from interlinked cultural origins that could trace their roots back through each successive empire.
The ancient Persians experienced cultural mingling over time, such as the Mediterranean Hellenistic era, which brought the Greeks and Romans. Much later, the Muslim Arabs disrupted the last of the ancient empires and imprinted their new religion, Islam, across Greater Iran. But the Persian culture held firm for millennia, and after five thousand years of imperial conquests, Iran retains the ancient identity of its first people.
In this audiobook, you will learn: More about the prehistoric ancestors of Iran and their tribal originsWhat is meant by “Persia” and how this changed over timeAbout the mighty Iranian Empires that dominated half of EurasiaThe influence of foreign empires and why they didn’t lastHow the Persian kings impacted major world religionsThe complexity of Iranian culture and why it survived for millenniaHow ancient causes have inspired Iran’s national identity

    Superstition in All Ages

"Superstition in All Ages" is a book written by French priest and philosopher Jean Meslier in the early 18th century. The book is a critique of religion and an argument for atheism. Meslier argues that religion, particularly Christianity, is based on superstition and that its claims cannot be proven.
Meslier's book is divided into two parts. The first part examines the origins of superstition and religion, arguing that they are based on fear, ignorance, and the desire for power. Meslier claims that the belief in supernatural beings and forces is a result of humanity's inability to explain natural phenomena, and that religion is a way for those in power to control and manipulate the masses.
The second part of the book is a direct attack on Christianity. Meslier argues that the Bible is a collection of myths and legends, and that its moral teachings are inconsistent and often immoral. He also critiques the Christian concept of God, arguing that it is illogical and contradictory.
Meslier's arguments were highly controversial in his time, and he was forced to keep his atheism a secret to avoid persecution. After his death, his manuscript was discovered and published, making him one of the earliest and most influential atheist thinkers in history.

The word Upanishad (upa-ni-shad) consists of, "Upa" means "near;" "ni" means "down;" "shad" means "to sit." Thus, Upanishad is to sit down near the teacher to discuss, learn, practice, and experience. There are some 200 or more Upanishads. Some are lost and are only known about because of being referenced in other Upanishads. Most of the Upanishads were kept secret for centuries, only passed on to others orally in the form of Shlokas (a category of verse line developed from the Vedic Anustubh meter).Maitra (Sanskrit: ?????) and Maitri (??????) are related words which literally mean "kindly, benevolent, good will, amity, friend of all creatures". The Maitrayaniya Upanishad is associated with the Maitrayanas school of the Yajurveda. It discusses metaphysical questions relating to Atman (Self, Soul). It is a prose style Upanishad with seven Prapathakas (or lessons). The Maitrayaniya Upanishad was probably composed in late 1st millennium BCE.The 11 principal Upanishads to which Sankara appeals in his great commentary on the Vedanta-Surtras are: Chandogya, Talavakara or Kena, Aitareya, Kaushitaki, Vajasaneyi or Isha, Katha, Mundaka, Taittirtiyaka or Taittiriya, Brihadaranyaka, Svetasvatara, and Prasna. They are also called the 11 classical Upanishads or the fundamental Upanishads of the Vedanta Philosophy. Apart from these, Maitrayana-Brahmana-Upanishad is also considered as an important Upanishad. The Upanishadic literature is not a religious scripture and is free from dogma and doctrines. It is not a part of any religion but is a philosophy for all times and for all. German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, impressed by the Upanishads, called the texts "the production of the highest human wisdom". Summary by Jothi

Against Empathy - The Case for...

A controversial call to arms, Against Empathy argues that the natural impulse to share the feelings of others can lead to immoral choices in both public policy and in our intimate relationships with friends and family.
Most people, including many policy makers, activists, scientists, and philosophers, have encouraged us to be more empathetic—to feel the pain and pleasure of others. Yale researcher and author Paul Bloom argues that this is a mistake. Far from leading us to improve the lives of others, empathy is a capricious and irrational emotion that appeals to our narrow prejudices. It muddles our judgment and often leads to cruelty. We are at our best when we are smart enough not to rely on it, and draw upon a more distanced compassion.
Based on groundbreaking scientific findings, Against Empathy makes the case that some of the worst decisions that individuals and nations make—from who to give money to, when to go to war, how to respond to climate change, and who to put in prison—are too often motivated by honest, yet misplaced, emotions. With clear and witty prose, Bloom demonstrates how empathy distorts our judgment in every aspect of our lives, from philanthropy and charity to the justice system; from culture and education to foreign policy and war. Without empathy, Bloom insists, our decisions would be clearer, fairer, and ultimately more moral.
Bound to be controversial, Against Empathy shows us that, when it comes to major policy decisions and the choices we make in our everyday lives, limiting our empathetic emotions is often the most compassionate choice we can make.
