Sinossi

“A man who isolates himself gives up to his destiny; he does not care about the moral progress. Speaking in moral terms, to think only of yourself is the same thing as not thinking of yourself at all, because the absolute end of the individual lies not inside him, but in humanity as a whole.”
-J.G. Fichte, The System of Ethics

Johann Gottlieb Fichte is best known for his Addresses to the German Nation, a key political book that enflamed German nationalism and helped unite the people of the disparate German territories against Napoleon’s French Empire. One of the founding fathers of German idealism, and the originator of thesis-antithesis-synthesis concept, Fichte is a figure of enormous historical importance who first rose to prominence as a professor of philosophy at the University of Jena.

Fichte’s highly popular lectures were later published as The Vocation of the Scholar, an ironic title, for Fichte indulges in fiery polemics against the figure of the scholar and puts forth the intellectual as the superior type, one for whom education is a tool to use for communitarian and anti-individualistic ends. Diego Fusaro not only discusses how Fichte, in contrast to other philosophers of his time, used the method of the enlightenment to arrive at paternalistic answers to the questions of “What is an education?” and “What are the educated to do with their education?” but also explores their relevance today.

Antelope Hill Publishing is proud to present Diego Fusaro’s Fichte and the Vocation of the Intellectual to the English-speaking world for the first time, translated from Italian by Anna Carnesecchi.

Saddam Hussein, the sixth president of Iraq, held power from July 16, 1979, until his downfall on April 9, 2003. A central figure in Iraq's political history, Saddam was a founding member of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, which advocated for a fusion of Arab nationalism and socialism, known as Ba'athism. The party's rise to power in Iraq was marked by the 1968 coup, often referred to as the 17 July Revolution, which saw the Ba'ath Party assume control. Saddam, a key figure in the party, was instrumental in establishing its dominance in Iraq.
Saddam's path to the presidency was shaped by his political astuteness and ruthless consolidation of power. He became vice president under General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, who was severely weakened by ill health. At a time when numerous factions within the country threatened to destabilize the government, Saddam focused on building and strengthening the security forces that would enable him to suppress dissent. He carefully navigated the complexities of power struggles between the administration and the military, ensuring his influence over both the party and the state apparatus. His careful maneuvering eventually led to his formal assumption of power in 1979, though he had already been Iraq's de facto leader for several years.
In the early 1970s, Saddam took aggressive steps to nationalize Iraq's most important industries, including the Iraq Petroleum Company and various independent banks. This move, though initially successful in securing Iraq's economic independence, led to long-term financial instability. The nationalization policies, combined with inflation and a series of bad loans, contributed to the eventual collapse of Iraq's financial sector. Nevertheless, Saddam's regime was buoyed by the economic boom fueled by Iraq's oil exports, which provided the government with significant wealth and the ability to fund state projects.

The story of modern management generally looks to the factories of England and New England for its genesis. But after scouring through old accounting books, Caitlin Rosenthal discovered that Southern planter-capitalists practiced an early form of scientific management. They took meticulous notes, carefully recording daily profits and productivity, and subjected their slaves to experiments and incentive strategies comprised of rewards and brutal punishment. Challenging the traditional depiction of slavery as a barrier to innovation, Accounting for Slavery shows how elite planters turned their power over enslaved people into a productivity advantage. The result is a groundbreaking investigation of business practices in Southern and West Indian plantations and an essential contribution to our understanding of slavery's relationship with capitalism.

We live in a wonderfully diverse and increasingly connected world. With that rise in connection comes a steep rise in expectations.
... Expectations that we know how to talk about diversity, including with people who are different than ourselves.
... Expectations that we lean into uncomfortable conversations, with sufficient fluency that we don't cause offence.
... Expectations that we act, instead of simply walking by inequality.
Although most of us are curious about diversity, and some would go as far as to call ourselves allies, very few of us are skilled in inclusion. In the absence of knowing what to do, we double down on being nice and hope that will be enough. Unfortunately, this optimistic attitude may harm as much as help.
Mind the Inclusion Gap is for anyone who wants to move beyond talking to actively shaping an inclusive future. It looks beyond singular diversity categories, exploring the connections between race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity. Filled with insight and everyday skills, it will help you navigate the polarised and divisive issues we face in the workplace and in the world.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte was a Chilean military officer and politician who dominated Chilean politics as a military dictator from 1973 to 1990. His rise to power marked a pivotal and controversial chapter in the nation’s history. Initially serving as the leader of the Military Junta of Chile from 1973 to 1981, he was declared President of the Republic by the junta in 1974, consolidating his role as Chile's de facto head of state. With the approval of a new constitution in 1981, his presidency was formalized, making him the de jure leader of the country until 1990.
Pinochet’s military career set the stage for his rise to power. After steadily climbing the ranks of the Chilean Army, he achieved the position of General Chief of Staff in 1972. In an unexpected turn, President Salvador Allende, leader of the democratically elected left-wing Unidad Popular government, appointed Pinochet as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army on August 23, 1973, just weeks before his eventual ouster. This appointment would prove consequential as Pinochet played a central role in the coup that toppled Allende's government on September 11, 1973. Supported by the United States, the coup ended civilian rule in Chile and marked the beginning of Pinochet’s authoritarian regime.
