The three stars on the Tennessee flag represent the three cultural divisions of the state-the Grand Divisions -East, Middle, and West Tennessee. Though culturally distinct, the three Tennessees share a common history of exploitation of colonial lands by Spanish, French, and British claims. For many years Tennessee was under the dominion of these flags. With full-color illustrations, Flags of Tennessee examines the many flags that have flown over the state, including the Spanish Castile and Leon, the French fleur-de-lis, and the British Union Jack, as well as the flags of the United States. Also included are county flags, city flags, battle flags, and a detailed section on the flags of the Indian tribes who lived throughout the state.
