LibriVox volunteers bring you 18 recordings of There Was a Cherry-Tree by James Whitcomb Riley. This was the Weekly Poetry project for May 13, 2012.Riley began his career writing verses as a sign maker and submitting poetry to newspapers. Thanks in part to an endorsement from poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, he eventually earned successive jobs at Indiana newspaper publishers during the latter 1870s. Riley gradually rose in prominence during the 1880s through his poetry reading tours. He traveled a touring circuit first in the Midwest, and then nationally, holding shows and making joint appearances on stage with other famous talents. Regularly struggling with his alcohol addiction, Riley never married or had children, and was involved in a scandal in 1888 when he became too drunk to perform. He became more popular in spite of the bad press he received, and as a result extricated himself from poorly negotiated contracts that limited his earnings; he quickly became very wealthy. He was dressing low-profile, but it was definitely him: red skin, horns, barbed tail, cloven hoofs, black goatee. He was unmistakable. Satan was buying soy milk and forty bucks' worth of unleaded fuel.

In a small town two miles north of Hell, our deadbeat narrator spots Satan filling up his red Corvette at the 7-Eleven. Satan's a washed-up has-been who's totally lost his edge . . . but when their eyes meet across the parking lot, the two embark on a torrid romance, by turns screwball, surreal, terrifying and tender.

Christopher Brett Bailey's electrifying monologue premiered at Soho Theatre, London, in April 2026.

'Devilishly good nasty fun. Hilarious and perversely sexy. A literary acid trip.'

'It's the ultimate road-trip into The Badlands. A pick-up at a 7-Eleven two miles north of Hell. The Devil in a red Corvette, nursing a pint of soya milk and the raging horn. Who could possibly resist? Fans of The Cramps, David Lynch and John Waters strap in - Christopher Brett Bailey is hotrodding his way to the Throne of Trash Culture and even Satan himself can't put on the brakes!'

CATHI UNSWORTH (author of Weirdo and Season of the Witch: The Book of Goth)

'Christopher Brett Bailey is a spectacularly brilliant wordsmith . . . his brain is permanently on fire. Hop on the back of his Harley, hold tight, you won't regret it.'

'It's hard to accept ourselves out there. But in here, with our people, we can accept each other.'
The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs, the only lesbian choir in the country, are trying to win their place on the Pride mainstage.
In a run-down church hall with an OWL (Older, Wiser Lesbian) at the helm, the ragtag choir navigate love, loss and trying to agree on song choices. But despite their best intentions, they find that harmony comes at a price.
Packed with laugh-out-loud moments and lots of lesbian drama, Iman Qureshi's play The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs was first performed at Soho Theatre, London, in 2022, directed by Hannah Hauer-King. This revised version of the play was published alongside the play's 2025 revival at Kiln Theatre, London.
