Summary

Former lawyer Merrin McKenzie has returned to her hometown of St Ives, the stunning coastal town in Cornwall. She has settled back into life there in a lovely cottage, and new friendships are beginning to blossom. An old friend, Jane Faulkner is going through a messy divorce, and her daughter Emily is keen to stay with Merrin, but just three days into the holiday, she disappears. Emily has pushed a note through Merrin's bedroom door to say she is going back home to Bristol but has left behind all of her possessions. It soon becomes clear she is not heading home and the police are notified, but when a ransom demand is made to her parents requesting £500,000 for the girl's safe return, matters take a distinctly sinister turn .

Holmes receives an odd letter that makes reference to vampires. Mr. Robert Ferguson, who comes to 221B Baker Street the next morning, has become convinced that his Peruvian second wife has been sucking their baby son's blood. By his first wife, he has a 15-year-old son named Jack, who suffered an unfortunate accident as a child and now, although he can still walk, does not have full use of his legs. Since the start of the bloodsucking, Jack has unaccountably been struck twice by his stepmother, although Mr. Ferguson cannot imagine why. Ever since being found out by her husband, she has locked herself in her room and refused to come out. Only her Peruvian maid, Dolores, is allowed in. She takes Mrs. Ferguson her meals.
Even before Holmes and Watson set off for Mr. Ferguson's house in Sussex, Holmes has worked out what is going on, and it has nothing to do with vampires. Holmes's trip is made simply to observe and confirm what he has already deduced.

The Organisation is a fantasy set in a make-believe world of wooden sailing ships, horse-drawn carriages and soldiers in red tunics and tall hats. Although it is a fairy tale it contains no magic or talking animals and is not meant for young children. It is intended for grown-ups, particularly ones with inquiring interests in a wide range of contentious issues.
A gold storage business is transformed into a very profitable bank when its owners find they can create paper money, and issue loans, without the need to back all their banknotes with gold. It transforms Areho into a flourishing kingdom. An association dedicated to protecting business interests is formed. To help obscure it from the public the association is not given a name, although to members of its innermost circles it is known as 'The Organisation'. By secretly infiltrating all centres of power and influence, including the monarchy and the news media, 'The Organisation' fulfils its goal, but astute members of its inner circles realise that the economic system they have created has a requirement of its own. It is an issue they cannot ignore.

    Who killed this wealthy couple?

It doesn't take a clue-sniffing Golden Retriever's sense of smell to know something is up. For semi-reformed computer hacker Steve Levitan, his long-time girlfriend, Lili, is acting out of character, and he's eager to figure out why and how he can help her. But that gets delayed when Steve and his golden Rochester are brought onto investigate a double homicide in a posh neighborhood of Stewart's Crossing.

Boris and Natalya Krimsky were both murdered in their mansion, and Steve's early forays into their personal data reveals a plethora of suspects. There are people cheated out of millions and people betrayed out of their American dream, each with a motive to kill the couple. But as Steve and Rochester delve deeper, they find that the motive to kill the couple might have a far more disturbing origin, and catching the killer requires Steve to bend all of the rules as a semi-reformed hacker.

With wit, heart, and canine antics, the team goes nose to the ground to bring a killer to justice, and to give Steve a new perspective on what makes a family.
