    Hearing God Through Galatians...

These four books of the New Testament were written by the Apostle Paul between 50 and 60 A.D.  Paul’s intent with his letters to the churches was to clear up doctrine, ensure the message of Jesus was correctly understood and taught and to encourage or rebuke as necessary.
In Galatia some believers were heretically teaching that while Jesus offered salvation, works were also necessary for it. In his letter to the Ephesians he stresses that Christians are saved by grace alone as a gift from God and “not by works so that no one would boast” (Eph 2:9).
The letter to the Philippians has a different tone. Though Paul was a prisoner of Nero while he wrote it, he speaks often of joy and rejoicing. He tells us the secret to joy during trials and encourages us to live in peace despite our circumstances.
With his letter to the Colossians, he again corrects bad theology by combating Gnosticism. He tells about the fullness of God in Jesus (Col 1:19 and 2:9) and warns those who worshipped angels (Col 2:18) that they have lost their connection to God.
Through these 4 books, Christians come to a better of understanding of who Jesus is, what He offers and how to live out our faith in Him.
Reading the Bible is different than reading any other book. It is more than a narrative about God, it is more than a story of broken individuals and the trials they faced. It is more than a set of rules and regulations. It is even more than a love letter. It is the very essence of Jesus. It is about Him, but there is more than that. It is God’s conversation with us. It is alive. It is active. It is a 2-way conversation.

We all endure trials, pain, and hardship in this life. The enemy often uses those experiences to convince us that our brokenness disqualifies us from ever being used by God again—that we can no longer be a testimony because of our emotional or physical scars. The truth is, your past pain and brokenness actually serve as preparation for what God wants to do in you and through you, if you will but surrender to and trust in him.

In Sacred Scars, neuropsychologist and fellow sufferer Dr. Michelle Bengtson helps you

    ● understand suffering through a biblical perspective

    ● discover how the trials of your life serve a purpose

    ● reflect on the healing that God has accomplished

    ● comfort others with the comfort God has given you

Just as Jesus's scars didn't disappear after his resurrection, our scars tell our story and lend credence to our testimony of the love and power of God. If you are ready to turn your past pain into present comfort and future hope, let Dr. Bengtson be your compassionate guide.

The desire to know God intimately is the great challenge of the Christian faith. Yet, how many are willing to pray the deeply personal prayer that makes it possible - the prayer to be made like Jesus?Michael Phillips shares how he has taken up that challenge. Then, he examines key turning points in the life of Jesus that illuminate what it means for each of us to be conformed to the image of God’s Son and to love like Jesus, think like him, pray like him, and trust the Father like him.In some ways, this is a dangerous audiobook- dangerous to status-quo spirituality. For the journey toward Christlikeness may be painful. Yet, that journey leads to the ultimate purpose God intends for all his sons and daughters. After listening to Make Me Like Jesus, Bishop William Frey commented: “Michael Phillips offers a much-needed corrective to…superficial descriptions of the Christian life. He dares us to abandon all candy-coated versions of the gospel.”

Even more tragic, she has encountered it all within Christian communities and the church.

As a highly respected trauma scholar and psychologist working in the United States and around the world for more than fifty years, she envisions a better way.

In When the Church Harms God's People, Langberg unveils what she has learned about how churches cause harm and why Christian communities often foster unhealthy leaders who end up hurting rather than protecting God's people. She also offers hope for the future, describing how churches can reflect Christ not just in what they teach but also in how they care for themselves and others.

The Priestly Blessing in Numbers 6, "The Lord bless you," is one of the most familiar and widely used liturgical texts in Christianity. Although often recited, it is not usually a subject of in-depth study.

In this addition to the Touchstone Texts series, highly regarded Old Testament scholar Stephen Chapman provides a detailed, engagingly written exposition of the Priestly Blessing as well as a broader exploration of blessing in the Old Testament. He explores the historical and liturgical use of the Priestly Blessing in the Jewish and Christian traditions and discusses key issues related to the practice of blessing within contemporary Christianity. His interpretation of the Priestly Blessing highlights the importance of the divine name and the way the blessing offers a vision of religious faith as "name bearing." Chapman's volume will be a helpful resource for pastors and seminarians and an important reminder to all Christians of the centrality of blessing to the life of faith.

The Touchstone Texts series addresses key Bible passages, making high-quality biblical scholarship accessible to the church. The series editor is Stephen B. Chapman.
