Sinossi

It was an empty landscape now with huge horizons in every direction, a compressed, steam-rollered desert where man had no place. We lacked the skills to carry out even the most basic fixes. If the van stopped working we were stuck. No one knew where we were and our last mobile signal had been 150 miles ago.'

Fifty-something and tired of arguing with John Humphrys over the day’s headlines, BBC journalists Geoff and David found themselves eagerly volunteering for redundancy. But rather than easing into retirement with the odd round of golf, they decided to buy a van and drive off to Mongolia. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time…

In an epic journey through Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Siberia and across the Gobi Desert, they discover more about each other in a few weeks than they did sharing an office for years.

Lying in wait are crooked cops, bent border guards and terrible roads, but also welcoming and curious locals, eager to help the pair on their mission.

Caterina Travels to Italy is a collection of dialogues that tell the story of a fictional Italian-American woman as she travels to Italy and then spends time there with Italian relatives. The story is a part of the Conversational Italian for Travelers series of books that was created for the beginning Italian student who wants to learn, “all the Italian you need to enjoy your trip to Italy!”
Each chapter in Caterina Travels to Italy begins with a brief introduction that summarizes the action to be played out, introduces the characters in the dialogue, and emphasizes important Italian grammar points. We follow the main character Caterina as she journeys to Italy, meets her relatives and their friends, and spends some vacation time at the beach. These dialogues focus on taking public transportation, as well as going to a party, meeting that special someone, making reservations, and eating out in a restaurant.
There are two ways to listen to Caterina Travels to Italy, which has been recorded with native Italian speakers and an Italian-American for the role of Caterina. The Italian-only audio for the complete 18 chapters of Caterina Travels to Italy is presented first, and is found on Tracks 3-20. The chapters are then repeated to include the English translation for each line, with Italian first and the English translation to follow. Listen to the chapter in Italian and then check your comprehension with the Italian-English chapter!

Following the Shambhala Sutra—an ancient manuscript written by Penchen Lama over two hundred years ago—Laurence Brahm started his journey to Shambhala in Lhasa and continued deep into the harsh regions of Tibet.Shambhala Sutra presents Brahm’s expedition across western Tibet’s Ngari region where he learned that the ancient sutra was actually a metaphorical guidebook. He traces a route embedded with riddles through deserts and mountains. The lessons learned from this journey (as told in the sutra as a prophecy) are that shortsighted greed, war, and failure to protect our environment will cause kingdoms and empires to vanish. Mankind’s future depends on ensuring a sustainable planet through more holistic economics, empowering communities and people, and preserving our environment. These are the messages hidden in the Shambhala Sutra.

A travelogue and historical exploration of Mexico from one of the twentieth century’s greatest travel writers Dame Rebecca West travels through Mexico and explores its people, history, religion, and culture in her unfinished work Survivors in Mexico, carefully stitched together by Bernard Schweizer in this posthumously published edition. West tackles the country’s broad historical legacy—the Spanish conquest and Mexican revolution, the muralist movement, race relations, and contemporary life—and delves into the personal, intimate lives of key figures such as Hernán Cortés, Montezuma, Dr. Atl, Diego Rivera, and Leon Trotsky. Conceived as a companion to West’s masterful classic Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, this book showcases the complexity of West’s character, addresses the paradoxes inherent in her work, and allows for a mature understanding of her ideology. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Rebecca West featuring rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the Department of Special Collections and University Archives, McFarlin Library, at the University of Tulsa.
