"The Festival" is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft written in October 1923 and published in the January 1925 issue of Weird Tales. The story was inspired by Lovecraft's first trip to Marblehead, Massachusetts, in December 1922. Lovecraft later called that visit "the most powerful single emotional climax experienced during my nearly forty years of existence." In a flash all the past of New England—all the past of Old England—all the past of Anglo-Saxondom and the Western World--swept over me and identified me with the stupendous totality of all things in such a way as it never did before and never did again. That was the high tide of my life. The narrator's path through Kingsport corresponds to a route to the center of Marblehead; the house with the overhanging second story is probably based on Marblehead's 1 Mugford Street. The church in the story is St. Michael's Episcopal Church on Frog Lane. Built in 1714, it is the oldest Anglican church in New England that is still standing at its original site. The church is on a modest hill; for most of the 18th century, it had a steeple. Its crypt, where parishioners were interred, remains. Since Lovecraft visited the church (as evidenced by his signature in the guest register), he may have spoken with the rector and learned such details about the church.

In Edgar Allan Poe’s gripping tale of survival and cosmic terror, A Descent into the Maelström plunges listeners into a tempest of elemental fury and existential dread. Set amidst the wild Norwegian coast, the story follows an old fisherman who recounts the nightmarish experience that turned his hair white and changed his life forever.
As a violent hurricane wrecks his fishing boat, he and his brothers are dragged toward the Moskoe-strom—a vast, apocalyptic whirlpool capable of swallowing ships whole. But amidst the chaos, a keen observation about how different objects behave in the vortex offers him a desperate shot at survival.
Told with Poe’s signature intensity and philosophical depth, this psychological maritime thriller explores mankind’s insignificance in the face of nature’s overwhelming power. A stunning blend of science, suspense, and Gothic atmosphere, it remains one of Poe’s most visually powerful and underrated works.

Then a drive-by shooting shatters her world again, and something ancient stirs inside her.
A powerful ancestral force awakens within Tamika, revealing supernatural gifts passed down through bloodlines. She’s chosen to become the next Warrior Angel, part of a hidden legacy charged with protecting Black communities from threats both seen and unseen.
Now, as the city descends deeper into chaos, Tamika must decide: Is it enough to fight within the system—or will she cross the line into something darker?
She hasn’t killed. Not yet. But the question looms over every choice she makes:
If killing one dealer could save a neighborhood, would it be worth it? At what point—if ever—is it not okay to kill, to save the lives of others?

I stood fixated at the sight in front of me, the magnificence of his features I could still see through the bloodstains on his cheeks. A grunt then hiss of pain suddenly escape his swollen lips and his eyes flutter open. He is still alive.
New town, new house… new dangers.
For Lynn, ditching Miami and moving to a small town hadn’t been about leaving her old life behind, it had been about moving forward with her new one. Though she hadn’t anticipated that this newfound happiness, she had discovered here would come with new threats.
It’s been 11 years since the gathering, and since Lynn discovered more about her true ancestry. They’d all learned a lot more about family, friendship, and their gifts, except along with this knowledge came the sacrifices and loses that we tended to learn about the hard way. Thankfully, there have been many joys, successes, and even a financial windfall for them along the journey. But what came next, this new threat, not even Lynn’s gift of premonition could have ever seen it coming.
What if the wrong people knew you could see or sense things that they couldn’t. What if it put you, your family, and so many other innocents in danger? But what if you could help the innocent by using your gift—would you do it, would you risk it?

Title: A Watcher by the Dead
    Author: Ambrose Bierce
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1889
    Public Domain: Yes
    Series Placement: Timeless Terrors #57
    Description:
A Watcher by the Dead is a masterclass in psychological horror — a tense, claustrophobic story that proves fear itself can be deadly.
The tale begins with a wager: one man must spend the night alone in a room with a corpse to prove that fear of the dead is mere superstition. At first, the room is silent and still, but as hours stretch on, dread slowly tightens its grip. Every shadow, every creak, every flicker of light becomes a torment, twisting his imagination into terror. The suspense crescendos as the prank meant to test courage takes a horrifying and fatal turn.
Bierce’s story relies on atmosphere and the human mind’s susceptibility to fear rather than gore or spectacle. The terror is immediate, intimate, and unforgettable.
Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance brings Bierce’s chilling tale of dread and fatal curiosity vividly to life. While the text is firmly in the public domain, this narration is an original performance and copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.
Part of Timeless Terrors, a series dedicated to resurrecting the masters of the macabre, A Watcher by the Dead reminds us that sometimes the most dangerous thing in a room is not the corpse itself… but the fear it inspires.
