  A single act of arson against the famous Reichstag building proved to be the catalyst that propelled Adolf Hitler to victory in the elections of March 1933, which set the German nation irrevocably on the path towards World War II. That war would plunge much of the planet into an existential battle that ultimately cost an estimated 60 million lives. 
  Of course, the Western Europeans tried and failed in notorious fashion to prevent that war by appeasing Hitler, who only became more ambitious as France and Britain refused to push back on his growing aggression, especially in the wake of the Anschluss, which Hitler’s future enemies all but justified due to Austria’s large German population. The Munich Agreement is now notorious because its promise proved barren within a very short period of time. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's actions either failed to avert or actually hastened the very cataclysm he wished to avoid at all costs. The agreement effectively signed away Czechoslovakia's independence to Hitler's hungry new Third Reich, and within two years, most of the world found itself plunged into a conflict anyway. 
  Initially, many people hailed Chamberlain's "success" at defusing Nazi aggression by handing over Czechoslovakia tamely to Hitler's control, but others remained dubious. Édouard Daladier, the French prime minister, "later told Amery that he turned up his coat collar to protect his face from rotten eggs when he arrived in Paris." A Foreign Office man, Orme Sargent, was disgusted, and he later said bitterly, "For all the fun and cheers, you might think they were celebrating a major victory over an enemy instead of merely the betrayal of a minor ally." Winston Churchill, the deal’s most famous critic, bitterly remarked, “England has been offered a choice between war and shame. She has chosen shame, and will get war.”

  Epicurus, a Greek philosopher born in 341 BCE on the island of Samos, founded the school of philosophy known as Epicureanism, which emphasized the pursuit of happiness through the cultivation of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. His teachings were revolutionary for their focus on the individual’s inner peace and well-being, rather than devotion to the gods or the pursuit of wealth and power. Epicurus advocated for a life of simple pleasures, good friendships, and intellectual contemplation, arguing that these were the true sources of happiness. 
    
  His philosophy was grounded in atomism, the belief that everything in the universe is made up of small, indivisible particles, or atoms, moving through the void. For Epicurus, the natural world was not governed by divine intervention, but by laws that could be understood through reason and observation. He believed that by understanding the workings of nature, individuals could free themselves from irrational fears, especially the fear of death and the gods. 
    
  Epicurus placed great importance on pleasure, defining it not as indulgence in material excess, but as the absence of pain (ataraxia) and the pursuit of a serene and balanced life. He argued that physical and mental pleasures, when experienced in moderation, contributed to a life of tranquility. Furthermore, he saw pain not as an inherent part of life, but as something to be minimized or avoided through thoughtful living and wise choices.

  Individuals who decide to take up learning about the Old Testament of the Bible are immediately faced with the difficult proposition of identifying the various peoples that the Hebrews met and sometimes came into conflict with when they entered the territory that eventually became Israel. The Moabites and Edomites were just two of the many Canaanite groups that the Hebrews dealt with, often violently, but there were dozens of other Canaanite groups, which were all for the most part identified through the names of their respective cities. In fact, before the Hebrews established a kingdom and before the Phoenicians colonized much of the Mediterranean, the Canaanites were the most important group in the Levant for much of the Bronze Age and into the early Iron Age. Although the Canaanites never created a unified nation-state or kingdom, their importance in the ancient Near East cannot be understated. It was at least partially because of that fact that the Canaanites were unable to resist their larger and more powerful neighbors that the average person today knows so little about their history, but modern studies have revealed that they developed a unique religion that influenced non-Canaanite peoples and continued to be practiced in some form centuries after the Canaanites ceased to be an identifiable people. Furthermore, during the height of the Bronze Age the Canaanites provided important resources to the Egyptian and Hittite Empires and played a key role in the geopolitical game of chess between those two kingdoms. It also goes without saying that the Canaanites were also a factor in the establishment of the Kingdom of Israel, as the battles they lost to the Hebrews later became the foundation of the Jewish kingdom.
