Sinossi

How today's unjust global order is shaped by uncertain expert knowledge—and how to fix itA World of Struggle reveals the role of expert knowledge in our political and economic life. As politicians, citizens, and experts engage one another on a technocratic terrain of irresolvable argument and uncertain knowledge, a world of astonishing inequality and injustice is born.In this provocative book, David Kennedy draws on his experience working with international lawyers, human rights advocates, policy professionals, economic development specialists, military lawyers, and humanitarian strategists to provide a unique insider's perspective on the complexities of global governance. He describes the conflicts, unexamined assumptions, and assertions of power and entitlement that lie at the center of expert rule. Kennedy explores the history of intellectual innovation by which experts developed a sophisticated legal vocabulary for global management strangely detached from its distributive consequences. At the center of expert rule is struggle: myriad everyday disputes in which expertise drifts free of its moorings in analytic rigor and observable fact. He proposes tools to model and contest expert work and concludes with an in-depth examination of modern law in warfare as an example of sophisticated expertise in action.Charting a major new direction in global governance at a moment when the international order is ready for change, this critically important book explains how we can harness expert knowledge to remake an unjust world.

Liberalism is a political and philosophical ideology rooted in the principles of individual liberty, equality, and limited government. At its core, liberalism emphasizes the autonomy of the individual, arguing that each person has the right to pursue their own life and happiness, free from unnecessary interference by the state or society. Emerging in the Enlightenment period, liberalism challenged the traditional structures of monarchies and feudal systems, advocating for the rights of the individual and the importance of reason, tolerance, and democratic participation.
The roots of liberal thought can be traced back to the works of early modern philosophers such as John Locke, whose ideas on natural rights and government by consent laid the foundation for liberal political theory. Locke’s assertion that individuals possess inherent rights to life, liberty, and property formed the basis for much of liberal thought, influencing the development of constitutionalism and democratic governance. Over time, thinkers like Montesquieu, Rousseau, and later John Stuart Mill contributed to the evolution of liberalism, expanding its focus to issues of civil liberties, political freedoms, and social equality.
A defining characteristic of liberalism is its emphasis on individual freedom. This includes both personal liberty—the freedom to make choices about one’s own life—and political liberty—the right to participate in the democratic process and have a say in the laws and policies that govern society. Classical liberals advocated for minimal government interference in the economy and individual affairs, emphasizing free markets, private property, and limited state power. The role of the state, in this view, is to protect the rights of individuals and maintain social order, but not to intervene in the private lives or economic transactions of citizens.

The Arab uprisings of the early 2010s raised hopes for the development of more democratic structures and better living conditions for millions in the region. Instead, they were followed by authoritarian backlash, civil wars, economic collapse and food and energy insecurity.

Young people are often the ones hit hardest by the conjunction of these problems. How do they cope with insecurities and growing uncertainties, and what drives them to pursue their own dreams in spite of being disenfranchised?

The Dispossessed Generation is the most comprehensive, in-depth study of young people in the MENA region to date, providing invaluable insights into their self-perceptions and life chances. In this volume, an interdisciplinary team of researchers assess a survey of 12,000 sixteen- to thirty-year-olds from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen. They illuminate the extent to which young people engage with their societies and mine new opportunities from a multiplicity of crises.

Now in hiding, a former wiseguy teams up with a veteran true-crime writer to take you inside Brooklyn’s gangland at the height of its violence.   This is the true story of Carmine Imbriale—a gambler, a brawler, a bandit, a bookie, an enforcer. For two decades, Imbriale was a street-level operative in one of the most violent crews in the Colombo Family, and he endeared himself to some of the major figures of organized crime while developing deadly disputes with others. Carmine and the 13th Avenue Boys is the jarring account of his lawless lifestyle culminating in a gang war in South Brooklyn, from which he emerges a survivor.   From his first arrest at fifteem for robbing a Coney Island pimp to surviving multiple assassination attempts, Imbriale offers up dozens of too-good-to-be-true tales featuring some of the most notorious gangsters, including Joe Colombo, Christie Tick, Jimmy Ida, Joe Waverly, Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, Johnny Rizzo, as well as other lions and lackeys of La Cosa Nostra, and details a beef with none other than Greg “The Grim Reaper” Scarpa Sr.   A young streetwise hustler, Imbriale thought he found loyalty, a brotherhood. Instead, he descended into a world of treachery and deceit, where your best friend is your executioner, and no one gets out alive. But no one expected him to become the domino that helped bring it all down.

"Virginia Hall: Most Dangerous" unveils the extraordinary life of a remarkable woman who defied expectations, shattered barriers, and left an indelible mark on history. In a world dominated by conflict, espionage, and intrigue, Virginia Hall emerged as a force to be reckoned with. With unparalleled determination and unwavering courage, she overcame both physical obstacles and societal constraints to become one of the most effective and feared spies of World War II.
From the clandestine corridors of Europe to the heart of the French Resistance, this book chronicles Virginia Hall's gripping journey as she navigates enemy territory, evades capture by the Gestapo, and orchestrates daring missions that altered the course of the war. Her mastery of disguise, her cunning intellect, and her ability to inspire loyalty in others made her a force that the Nazis struggled to comprehend and contain.
"Virginia Hall: Most Dangerous" goes beyond the battlefield to explore the complexities of her character, the sacrifices she made, and the legacy she left behind. A trailblazer in the world of intelligence, her story resonates as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of one individual to reshape the destiny of nations. This riveting account sheds light on the life of a true hero whose contributions have, until now, remained unjustly overshadowed by history's shadows.

‘He who cannot find wonder, mystery, awe, the sense of a new world and an undiscovered realm in the places by the Gray’s Inn Road will never find those secrets elsewhere.’ – Arthur Machen
The Grey Soul of London is an audio guided tour. Robert Kingham takes a walk across the worn and hollowed stones of the Angel and Clerkenwell districts of London in search of places that inspired the writer Arthur Machen (1863-1947). This was originally a historical guided tour commissioned for the Museum of London’s Urban Myths season in 2011.
The Grey Soul of London has now been rewritten and expanded for 2023, with incidental music by Rich Cochrane. Everything you need in terms of directions and instructions is contained within the audio narrative, so you can just listen and walk. If you want, you can also find a map of the walk online at minimumlabyrinth.org, plus a picture gallery illustrating some of the people, places and events mentioned.
‘It is a district both devious and obscure, and I suppose that its twisting streets and unexpected squares of dusty trees will all come to ruin before they are intelligently explored.’ – Arthur Machen
