Cleveland Moffett (1863-1926) was an American journalist and author who contributed articles and stories to magazines and weeklies. He first became famous with his short mystery story "The Mysterious Card", which was published in the Boston-based The Black Cat in 1895. This tale caused a sensation, partly because it did not reveal the answer to the puzzle posed, thereby gaining widespread attention and engaging his readers in speculation for months. It was followed up a year later by "The Mysterious Card Revealed", which finally provided the solution to the first riddle. In "The Mysterious Card" an American visiting Paris for the first time has a strange and terrible experience. A beautiful lady deliberately drops a card on his table at the Folies Bergeres with some writing on it in French. As he does not speak the language, he asks his hotel manager to translate. On reading the card, the manager immediately throws him out of the hotel. At the next hotel, the same thing happens. An old friend reacts just as badly and, like the previous two, refuses to explain what is on the card.He decides to hire a detective agency, but immediately he is arrested and imprisoned. But this is only the beginning of his woes. When he is released, he returns to his wife and shows her the card....Both "The Mysterious Card" and "The The Mysterious Card Revealed" are included in this audiobook.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

A new century dawns, one in which America would become pre-eminent as its industrial might and military power rose above all others. In literature too its authors tackled new forms and new ideas, they shied away from little, immersing themselves and their readers in the promise of a new Century.

This is the third volume of short stories shortlisted for the Chawton House Library Short Story Award. It takes as its inspiration minor characters from the famous novels and tells the tales that continued behind the scenes, at Pemberly, Mansfield Park and elsewhere. Award winner, 'The Wedding Planner' takes the characters from Austen's novella Lady Susan and transports them to the 21st century. Other stories focus on the less well known of the Bennet sisters,Kitty and Lydia, and of deceased Mary Price. There are tales of George Wickham and Charlotte Collins. Some are contemporary to Austen others contemporary to current readers. All are an intriguing insight into the inner lives of one of our most loved authors' best loved works.

Lettice Galbraith is as mysterious as the stories she wrote. She appeared on the literary scene in 1893 with a rash of short stories and one novel, published another story four years later, and then disappeared without a trace. Yet despite the brevity of her presence on the literary stage, her supernatural stories have remained popular to this day.'The Ghost's Revenge' is a classic gothic horror story about a vengeful ghost which visits a terrible curse upon anyone who attempts to live in the ancient Ravenshill Hall.
