Sinossi

In "A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett," the legendary frontiersman and folk hero invites readers into his world through a vivid autobiographical account that intertwines adventure, survival, and self-exploration. Illustrated with Crockett's distinctive voice, the work merges an informal storytelling style with rich and descriptive language, encapsulating the spirit of early 19th-century America. The narrative exists within a broader context of American Romanticism, capturing the ethos of individualism and the wilderness as both setting and character, reflecting on themes of bravery, honor, and the complexities of frontier life. David Crockett, known as the "King of the Wild Frontier," was a politician, soldier, and seasoned hunter whose experiences greatly informed his writings. Born in 1786 in Tennessee, his background in the rugged wilderness shaped not only his character but also his embodiment of the American frontier spirit. Crockett's political career and his subsequent life as a itinerant showman showcased his deep understanding of American identity, making his narratives resonate on both personal and national levels. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in American history, folklore, and the evolving identity of the United States. Crockett's genuine storytelling and reflective insights offer a rich tapestry of early American life, making it an essential read for those eager to engage with the complexities of the frontier narrative.

The first biography of George Washington's extraordinary nephew, who inherited Mount Vernon and was Chief Justice John Marshall's right-hand man on the Supreme Court for nearly thirty years.

In Washington's Heir, Gerard N. Magliocca gives us the first published biography of Bushrod Washington, one of the most underrated Founding Fathers. Born in 1762, Justice Washington fought in the Revolutionary War, served in Virginia's ratifying convention for the Constitution, and was Chief Justice John Marshall's partner in establishing the authority of the Supreme Court. Though he could only see from one eye, Justice Washington wrote many landmark decisions defining the fundamental rights of citizens and the structure of the Constitution, including Corfield v. Coryell—an influential source for the Congress that proposed the Fourteenth Amendment. As George Washington's personal heir, Bushrod inherited both Mount Vernon and the family legacy of owning other people, one of whom was almost certainly his half-brother or nephew. Yet Justice Washington alone among the Founders was criticized by journalists for selling enslaved people and, in turn, issued a public defense of his actions that laid bare the hypocrisy and cruelty of slavery.

From the tennis court to the boxing ring, the athletics track to the football pitch, the visibility of women in sport has been gathering pace. Women's competitions are increasingly popular.

In Roar Sam takes a deep dive into the experiences of some of sport's most high-profile female athletes - some have overcome heartbreaking adversity to reach the top of their game; others have succeeded in the face of prejudice. Like Sam, all have been propelled by sheer grit and determination to succeed. Many now campaign for women's equality and acceptance in sport, knowing the confidence it can bring young girls and the message that they can achieve anything.

Featuring a series of candid interviews from some of sport's most successful women, Sam lifts the lid on what it takes to reach those heights: from coping with puberty to foregoing teenage fun to pursue a dream; from the punishing physical training schedule to the mental power needed to win or bounce back from defeat; and coping with the pressure of the media spotlight. And, what it feels like in that magical moment when you step up to the podium knowing every sacrifice has been worth it.

Roar is a celebration of the bold and fearless - the women empowering future generations to follow in their footsteps - but it is also an inspiring look at how sport can change lives and challenge society.
