Sinossi

Divine Comedy, Longfellow's Translation, Hell is an Italian narrative poem by Dante Alighieri. Alighieri was an Italian poet, writer and philosopher. The poem's inventive visual sense of the afterlife is typical of the medieval worldview as it existed in the Western Church by the 14th century. Excerpt:
"Day was departing, and the embrowned air
Released the animals that are on earth
From their fatigues; and I the only one
Made myself ready to sustain the war,
Both of the way and likewise of the woe,
Which memory that errs not shall retrace.
O Muses, O high genius, now assist me!
O memory, that didst write down what I saw,
Here thy nobility shall be manifest!"

Three urgent and compelling plays, joint winners of the 2021 New Writing Prize awarded by acclaimed theatre company Papatango, in partnership with English Touring Theatre.
Some Of Us Exist In The Future by Nkenna Akunna
Fresh off the plane from the UK, Chiamaka is new to Brooklyn and its extremes. She's new to queer dating, to the realities of being an immigrant. Most of all, she's new to the voices of the gods… Utterly original, wryly funny and always gripping, Some Of Us Exist In The Future follows one woman's search for a place to belong in a world that's not all it seems.
Ghost Stories from an Old Country by Tajinder Singh Hayer
Amar's older brother Dalvir has always told a good ghost story – properly unsettling, dark tales that send a chill right through Amar's soul. But now Dalvir's almost a ghost himself, cloistered and secretive. Amar desperately wants his brother back, but can he unravel Dalvir's stories to reconnect with the only family he has left? Ghost Stories from an Old Country is a riveting and poignant exploration of the ties that bind us, threaded through with captivating fables.
The Silence and The Noise by Tom Powell
Every teenager knows what it's like to be stuck between things: childhood and maturity, innocence and experience, hope for the future and uncertainty about what it might bring. But Daize is torn between even greater challenges: her love for her vulnerable mother and her dangerous friendship with Ant. An outsider with knockout trainers, Ant has just appeared on her doorstep, bringing with him a whole world of trouble. The Silence and The Noise beautifully captures the story of two young people on the edge.
All three plays were produced and premiered by Papatango and English Touring Theatre in 2021 as audio plays, presented to audiences via specially designed audio stations that toured UK theatres.
'Remarkable unearthers of new talent' Evening Standard on Papatango
'Astonishingly brilliant… one of the best debut plays I have ever seen' BBC Radio 4's Saturday Review on Shook by Samuel Bailey, winner of the 2019 Papatango New Writing Prize

LibriVox volunteers bring you 9 recordings of A Health by Edward Coote Pinkney. This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for February 19, 2012.Edward Coote Pinkney was an American poet, lawyer, sailor, professor, and editor. Born in London in 1802, Pinkney made his way to Maryland. After attending college, he joined the United States Navy and traveled throughout the Mediterranean and elsewhere. He then attempted a law career but was unsuccessful and attempted to join the Mexican army, though he never did. He died at the age of 26 in 1828.Pinkney published several lyric poems inspired primarily by the work of British poets. Critic and poet Edgar Allan Poe supported Pinkney's work after his death, quoting from his poetry in a lecture series. Poe also suggested Pinkney would have been more successful if he was a New Englander rather than a Southern writer. This poem is taken from the Yale Book of American Verse. 1912, Thomas R. Lounsbury, ed. (1838–1915)

WINNER OF THE 2022 PULITZER PRIZE IN POETRYWINNER OF THE 2021 NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR POETRYWINNER OF THE 2022 PEN/VOELCKER AWARD FOR POETRY COLLECTIONWINNER OF THE 2021 LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE FOR POETRYA resplendent life in sonnets from the author of Four-Legged Girl, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize"The sonnet, like poverty, teaches you what you can do / without," Diane Seuss writes in this brilliant, candid work, her most personal collection to date. These poems tell the story of a life at risk of spilling over the edge of the page, from Seuss's working-class childhood in rural Michigan to the dangerous allures of New York City and back again. With sheer virtuosity, Seuss moves nimbly across thought and time, poetry and punk, AIDS and addiction, Christ and motherhood, showing us what we can do, what we can do without, and what we offer to one another when we have nothing left to spare. Like a series of cels on a filmstrip, frank: sonnets captures the magnitude of a life lived honestly, a restless search for some kind of "beauty or relief." Seuss is at the height of her powers, devastatingly astute, austere, and—in a word—frank.

    Just Like You
You’re my hope. You’re my hero.
You know all I am and what I can be.
Take this hard heart and make it like yours.
Holy Father, I need your heart.

You’re my heart. You’re my hero.
Let my life reflect your love.
Give me eyes to see past walls.
Give me ears to hear heart cries.
Give me hands that heal in your name.
O Holy Father, I want to be just like you.

You’re my Father. You’re my hero.
May my spirit walk with you.
Train my mind to see the lost ones.
Tune my ears to hear your voice.
May my soul shine with your light.
Dear Holy Father, I want to be just like you.

You’re my light. You’re my hero.
You know all I am and what I will be.
Take this one soul and make it like yours.
Dear Dad, I want to be just like you.

Three acclaimed one-act plays from the early years of the author of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. With the initial productions of The Death of Bessie Smith, The Sandbox, and The American Dream, Albee consolidated his reputation as a brilliant new talent of the New York theater scene. These three plays tackle major themes such as race relations, American family life, and the essence of theater itself—each of which still continue to resonate. Representing the bold and exciting periods in the then-young career of widely considered America’s most popular and imaginative playwrights, this edition is a must-have for theater lovers.“One of the few genuinely great living American dramatists.” —Ben Brantley, The New York Times
