Sinossi

A gripping, human-centered account of how brilliant minds created humanity's most destructive weapons—and forever changed the world.

In December 1938, two German chemists split a uranium atom in a Berlin laboratory and inadvertently opened the door to the Nuclear Age. Within seven years, their discovery would lead to the most ambitious scientific project in human history and weapons capable of destroying entire cities in a single flash. This is the complete story of how theoretical physics became the ultimate instrument of war, told through the eyes of the remarkable people who made it possible.

From Einstein's fateful letter to Roosevelt warning of Nazi atomic research, to the desperate race of the Manhattan Project employing 130,000 people across secret cities built from scratch, to the moral anguish of scientists who realized they had given humanity the power to destroy itself—this book reveals the extraordinary human drama behind the atomic bomb. Meet J. Robert Oppenheimer, the poetry-quoting physicist who led Los Alamos while struggling with the ethics of mass destruction. Witness the Hungarian refugees whose fears of Hitler drove them to lobby for American atomic weapons. Follow the German scientists whose early lead dissolved into confusion and missed opportunities. Experience the terror and triumph of the Trinity test, when humans first harnessed the power of the stars.

But the story doesn't end with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The book traces the bomb's devastating human cost—from the hibakusha survivors whose suffering we're still documenting today, to the nuclear arms race that followed, to Oppenheimer's persecution during the McCarthy era for daring to question whether America should build every weapon that science made possible. It explores how Soviet spies stole atomic secrets, how the nuclear club expanded from two nations to nine, and how the world learned to live under the permanent shadow of potential annihilation.

Drawing on extensive research and told with compelling narrative drive, this book makes the complex science accessible while never losing sight of the human beings at its center. It grapples honestly with the moral questions that have haunted participants and observers for nearly eight decades: Was the bomb necessary to end World War II? Could the destruction of two cities be justified to save other lives? What responsibility do scientists bear when their discoveries are used for mass destruction?

More than a history of the atomic bomb, this is a story about human nature itself—about how brilliance and moral blindness can coexist, how fear and hope shape scientific endeavor, and how a species capable of unlocking the secrets of the universe must learn to live with the consequences of its own knowledge. At a time when new technologies once again raise fundamental questions about human wisdom and responsibility, the lessons of the Manhattan Project have never been more relevant.

The atomic bomb was created by people, not forces of history, and understanding those people—their motivations, their struggles, their choices—is essential to understanding how we arrived at our nuclear age and what we might do next. This book tells their story with the drama, complexity, and moral weight it deserves.

The ancient ruins of Tiwanaku have fascinated explorers, scholars, and travelers for centuries. Nestled on the altiplano of Bolivia near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, Tiwanaku has been a site of mystery and intrigue since its rediscovery by European chroniclers. However, long before outsiders arrived, indigenous Andean communities revered the site as a sacred place, connecting it to their ancestors and the origins of civilization in the region.
Spanish chroniclers in the sixteenth century were among the first Europeans to record accounts of Tiwanaku. Conquistadors like Pedro Cieza de León described the ruins with awe, noting the massive stone blocks and intricate carvings scattered across the landscape. They speculated that such a monumental city could not have been built by the indigenous people they encountered, leading to myths of lost civilizations and supernatural origins. Some even believed that Tiwanaku predated the Great Flood, a theory influenced by biblical narratives. These early interpretations, though often misguided, helped cement Tiwanaku’s reputation as one of the most enigmatic ancient sites in the Americas.
During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, explorers and archaeologists began conducting more systematic investigations of Tiwanaku. Travelers such as Ephraim Squier and Arthur Posnansky documented the ruins extensively, producing sketches and maps that revealed the scale and complexity of the site. Posnansky, in particular, developed theories suggesting that Tiwanaku was over ten thousand years old, arguing that its architectural alignments reflected advanced astronomical knowledge. Though modern research has debunked these extreme claims, his work brought significant attention to Tiwanaku and laid the groundwork for future archaeological studies.

For the first time, a Neuroscientist and Senior Lecturer at MIT reveals the surprising science that supports The Law of Attraction as an effective tool for self-discovery and offers a guide to discovering your authentic self to access your best life now.
Self-help books like The Secret show us that if we can tap into “The Law of Attraction,” we have the power to change our destiny simply by reshaping our mind. Millions of people have used the ancient systems of manifestation and visualization to find health, success, love, friendship, wealth, and more. But does the “Law of Attraction” actually work? And more important, is this kind of life-changing philosophy within reach for everyone, even the most skeptical among us?

As Dr. Tara Swart, psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and Senior Lecturer at MIT shows us in The Source, if we can strip away our skepticism, these ancient tools of manifestation and visualization are fundamentally powerful and incredibly effective at freeing us of self-limiting behaviors and propelling us toward our truest, most authentic selves. Swart reveals how and why these systems actually work by offering the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience and behavioral psychology, including lessons in neuroplasticity, magneticism, emotional and logical thinking, and even hydration, self-care, and relaxation. Next, she describes her own journey from skeptic to believer, and guides readers through the scientific breakthroughs and personal revelations that changed her from an unhappy, close-minded, and disconnected woman wanting more from life, to a successful entrepreneur living with confidence, purpose, and joy.

The truth is, most of the things we want—health, happiness, wealth, love—are governed by our ability to think, feel, and act—in other words, by our brain. Dr. Swart combines the insights and inspiration of The Secret with the practical lessons of The Master Key System to help a new generation fulfill their dreams. The Source is a rigorous, proven toolkit for unlocking our minds—and reaching our fullest potential.

How the gospel equips Christians to live confidently for Christ in an increasingly secular society, facing the challenges of the future with confidence. We are living in a time of rapid cultural change, when Christian views are often seen as outdated and even dangerous. This can leave us feeling anxious about how to live out what we believe and uncertain about the future of the church. Steve McAlpine’s first book, Being the Bad Guys, sought to explain how our culture ended up so far away from biblical Christianity and how to reach out with the gospel wisely. In this book, he explores where things are heading and what we can do about that now, both as individuals and as a church. Steve examines secular narratives about purpose and authenticity, connectedness and progress, and compares them to the promises made by the Bible. He shows that the Bible offers a more satisfying, more realistic, and more hopeful vision of the future. He also examines the things that cause many Christians and non-Christians to be anxious about the future: technological change, political polarization, clashes over climate, and culture wars around gender and identity. He reminds readers that God is in control and helps them to think through how they can live wholeheartedly for Christ, facing the challenges of the future with confidence and leading the way in terms of citizenship, stewardship, and community. Stephen McAlpine is the Director for Cultural Engagement at City to City Australia. A former pastor, he now writes and speaks on theology, church, and culture.
