Franz Kafka was born on 3rd July 1883 in Prague, then in Bohemia, the eldest of 6, into a middle-class Jewish family.

Life for the young Kafka and his passion for literature was often made an ordeal by his over-bearing and domineering entrepreneur of a father.

In 1889 Kafka was sent to the Deutsche Knabenschule, an elementary school in Prague. His father would only allow him to be educated in German-speaking schools and even went so far as to limit visits to the synagogue to four a year.

In 1901 he graduated from the classics-oriented Altstädter Gymnasium. Kafka did well there and across a large range of subjects. He now enrolled at the Charles Ferdinand University, to study chemistry, but quickly switched to law for which he obtained his degree in June 1906 and then performed the mandatory year of unpaid service as clerk at the civil and criminal courts.

A job at an Italian insurance company left him little time to write and after a year he took another job with the Worker's Accident Insurance Institute for the Kingdom of Bohemia where he stayed until ill health led to his resignation in 1922.

Although he saw work as a means to pay the bills and to allow him time to write, he received several promotions and was noted as a good employee.

By 1917 Kafka was suffering from tuberculosis, which required frequent periods of convalescence. Interspersed with this, were several intense affairs before he settled in Berlin with Dora Diamant, a 25-year-old kindergarten teacher who herself having left the ghetto now influenced Kafka's interest in the book of Jewish law, the Talmud.

Kafka’s on-going health was littered with problems. Apart from TB there were several other ailments, including migraines, insomnia, boils, depression, all usually brought on by excessive stresses and strains. He attempted to counteract all of this by naturopathic treatments, a vegetarian diet and consuming large quantities of unpasteurized milk.

His tuberculosis still worsened. He returned to Prague, where he died on 3rd June 1924. He was 40.

His literary works are few in number but towering in influence. His masterpieces include ‘The Trial’, ‘The Metamorphosis’ as well as a number of short stories which reveal facets of humankind that truthfully could only be born from Kafka’s brain and pen.

    Title: The Sea Curse
    Author: Robert E. Howard
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1928
    Public Domain: Yes
    Series: Timeless Terrors
    Number: 99
    Description:
The Sea Curse is a brooding tale of vengeance, doomed love, and the relentless power of fate, set against the harsh winds and restless tides of the North Sea. The story follows a fisherman whose youthful betrayal of a dark-eyed woman—ostracized by the village as a witch—returns to haunt him years later. When she vanishes into the sea after calling down a terrible curse, he dismisses her words as the ravings of a scorned heart. But the ocean remembers.
As time passes, prosperity and family dull his guilt—until the sea begins to claim what he loves most. One by one, tragedy strikes with uncanny precision, and whispers of witchcraft rise again among the wary villagers. Howard weaves folklore and fatalism into a stark maritime drama, where superstition and destiny intertwine and no man may outrun the tides of his own making.
Unlike tales of cosmic horror, The Sea Curse derives its dread from inevitability—the slow, tightening coil of retribution born from cruelty and pride. The sea itself becomes a silent, implacable force: vast, indifferent, and hungry.
Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures Howard’s austere prose and gathering sense of doom, immersing listeners in a world of crashing surf, lonely shores, and ancestral fear.

In a future where aging has been cured and death has been carefully regulated, humanity has achieved what appears to be perfect stability. Population is fixed. Order is absolute. Every new life must be balanced by a willing death.
Inside a Chicago hospital, this system is carried out with quiet efficiency. Clerks keep count. Doctors follow protocol. Volunteers step forward. When a man waits for the birth of triplets, the logic of this world presses in on him, forcing a reckoning that no amount of order can soften.
First published in 1962, 2 B R 0 2 B is one of Kurt Vonnegut’s most chilling and incisive short works—a clinical dystopia rendered with calm prose, sharp irony, and devastating restraint. The story examines what happens when compassion is replaced by systems, and when moral responsibility is reduced to procedure.
Narrated with measured clarity, this recording preserves the story’s unsettling balance between reason and horror, leaving listeners to confront a question that remains disturbingly unresolved.
