Sinossi

Daniel Defoe's "Atalantis Major" is a fascinating foray into speculative fiction, melding satire with social commentary as it explores the echoes of a fictional utopian society. Written in the early 18th century, this work exemplifies Defoe's characteristic prose—a blend of realism, imagination, and astute observations of human nature. Through its vivid descriptions and intricate narrative structure, the book critiques the societal norms of Defoe's time while examining the complex interplay between civilization and its ideals. As a pioneering novelist and journalist, Defoe's insights into the human condition were shaped by his diverse experiences, including his tumultuous involvement in trade, politics, and journalism. The themes presented in "Atalantis Major" reflect his deep engagement with Enlightenment ideals, as well as his understanding of moral philosophy and criticisms of contemporary governance. Defoe's ability to weave personal experiences into his fictional landscapes led him to create a narrative that is not only entertaining but also provocatively reflective of his era. Recommended for scholars and casual readers alike, "Atalantis Major" invites contemplation on the nature of utopia and the limitations of human ambition. Defoe's masterful blend of satire and thoughtful social critique offers profound insights that remain relevant today, making this work essential for anyone interested in early modern literature or the evolution of the novel as a form.

The Suppliants, also called The Suppliant Maidens, or The Suppliant Women, is a play by Aeschylus. It was probably first performed sometime after 470 BC. It was long thought to be the earliest surviving play by Aeschylus due to the relatively anachronistic function of the chorus as the protagonist of the drama. However, evidence discovered in the mid-20th century shows it one of Aeschylus' last plays, definitely after The Persians and possibly after Seven Against Thebes....The Danaids form the chorus and serve as the protagonists. They flee a forced marriage to their Egyptian cousins. When the Danaides reach Argos, they entreat King Pelasgus to protect them. He refuses pending the decision of the Argive people, who decide in the favor of the Danaids. Danaus rejoices the outcome, and the Danaids praise the Greek gods. Almost immediately, a herald of the Egyptians comes to attempt to force the Danaids to return to their cousins for marriage. Pelasgus arrives, threatens the herald, and urges the Danaids to remain within the walls of Argos. The play ends with the Danaids retreating into the Argive walls, protected. - Summary by Wikipedia

A two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist shreds the GOP’s record of backward policies and abysmal leaders. Luckovich takes aim at the NRA, Trump, Bush, Ted Cruz, and more.

The Twisted History of the GOP is an editorial cartoon exploration into the ongoing crack-up of the Republican party. Once a proud, competent counterbalance to the Democratic party, the GOP began to change in the ’90s with the arrival of Republican representative and future House Speaker Newt Gingrich to Congress, assisted by radical radio host Rush Limbaugh and a new television network, the right-wing, propaganda-spewing Fox News. In the years that followed, they were aided by Mitch McConnell and the George W. Bush and Trump administrations, in transforming the GOP into what it is now: a fascist, racist, anti-science, pro-conspiracy cult, in thrall to the twice-impeached conman and former president, Donald Trump.

These cartoons will shock and delight you, and you won’t be able to look away from Luckovich’s witty editorial wisdom. Combining a rapier wit alongside exceptional caricatures, The Twisted History of the GOP will make you laugh until you cry.
