As the opening motto recites: IN THIS WORLD, LOVE IS THE ONLY CURE FOR A SICKENED SOUL! Dan Duțescu immediately establishes the essential character of his poems: it is not society that consents to love, but the very planet, a sign the poet is certain that the values he believes in are shared by all his fellow beings.
Poignant words that emerge from the depths of his essence, the author generously strips himself of any superfluous structure.
Every word is pinned down with candour and strength, in an endless expanse that falls into the abyss, into the sea and then always rises up and rises again, because the strength of love is impregnable and eternal.

Dan Duțescu - born in the town of Craiova, in the southern part of Romania, in a landscape of rare beauty with mountains on the horizon and rapid rivers crossing the forests near the mountain area. All this marked his childhood years. The greatest Romanian poet, namely Mihai Eminescu, repeatedly visited the grandparents’ house. His father fought in the Second World War, having the rank of lieutenant in the Romanian army, being wounded at Stalingrad and his mother was a graduate of the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest. A family of intellectuals, with a childhood marked by joys, but also by many shortcomings related to the lack of food, clothes suitable for different seasons and the persecution of the communist system against his father who throughout his life was followed and even investigated by the security organs of state of the dictatorship regime established by Nicolae Ceausescu.
Dan graduated from both departments of the Faculty of Law in Bucharest, the first in 1985 and the second in 1992, and nowadays is still a lawyer in the Craiova Bar Association.
Throughout this period and until now, he has been preoccupied with putting down on paper feelings of love towards people, nature, God, and things related to the small and big universe.
He likes to paint, play the piano and, last but not least, play tennis.

The Love Poems

Ovid

The Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid) is best known for his epic poem Metamorphoses, a collection of myths and legends from Ancient Greece and Rome. His works continue to be widely read and admired, and he is regarded as one of the most significant poets of ancient Rome.
Ovid’s love poems are both brilliant and evocative. In Amores (‘Loves’), the romantic mysteriousness of elegiac love-poetry is exploded by his witty and ironic treatment of the form. Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love) and Remedia Amoris (The Cures for Love) both lay down the rules for the game of love, which both sexes can play.
A.D. Melville’s translations, which also include the lesser-known Cosmetics for Ladies, have been specially licensed for this recording. It is delivered with customary panache by David Timson.

This is a thriller which traces the history of the Stevens family from 1916 to 2020, covering four generations. What is so unusual about this family is that they are all special intelligence operatives and serve in an ultra-secret unit answering to senior military officers appointed directly by the King. In each generation, the eldest son is selected to carry on the tradition when he reaches the age of 21 years.The operatives are highly-trained as intelligence agents, and their role is to act as judge, jury and executioner of the targets selected. The targets are men and women who have been engaged in treasonous activities or conducting espionage for a foreign power, but the agent has been given the discretion to satisfy himself that the charges are justified before he executes the offender.

Kelly Jones's My Mother's Funeral: The Show playfully tackles the inequalities we face around death, and the cost of turning your loved ones into art. It was co-produced by Paines Plough; Mercury Theatre, Colchester; Belgrade Theatre, Coventry; Landmark Theatres and Royal & Derngate, Northampton – and premiered in 2024 at the Belgrade, before a UK tour including a run at Paines Plough's Roundabout at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it won a Fringe First Award and a Summerhall Lustrum Award.
