Sinossi

Includes previously unpublished interviews and photos: “His research is extensive, but the overall pace through these two hundred pages is breezy and entertaining.” —Vintage Rock   At a time when acid rock and heavy metal dominated popular music, The Band rebelled against the rebellion with tight ensemble arrangements, masterful musicianship, highly literate lyrics, and a respect for the musical traditions of the American South. Comprised of Canadians Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson, and Arkansas-born Levon Helm, The Band sparked a new appreciation for America’s musical roots, fusing R&B, jump blues, country, folk, boogie-woogie, swing, Cajun, New Orleans-style jazz, and rock, and setting the foundations for the Americana that would take hold thirty years later.   The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music explores the diverse influences on the quintet’s music, and the impact that their music had in turn on contemporary music and American society. Through previously unpublished interviews with Robbie Robertson, Eric Andersen, Pete Seeger, and the late Rick Danko, as well as numerous other sources, Craig Harris surveys The Band’s musical journey from sidemen for, among others, Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan to rock legends in their own right.    Touching on the evolution of rock and roll, the electrifying of folk music, unionism, the Civil Rights Movement, changes in radio formatting, shifting perceptions of the American South, and the commercializing of the counterculture, as well as drug dependency, alcoholism, suicide, greed, and the struggle against cancer, Harris takes readers from The Band’s groundbreaking albums, Music from Big Pink and The Band, through their final releases and solo recordings, as well as their historic appearances at Woodstock, the Isle of Wight Festival (with Dylan), Watkins Glen (with the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead), and the filmed final concert known as the Last Waltz (with an all-star cast). Sixteen previously unpublished photographs, by the author, are included.

A gorgeous, poignant, and unflinchingly humorous memoir for listeners of Cheryl Strayed and Michelle Zauner about a woman overcoming dramatic loss and finding reinvention

In this exquisite story, Poorna Bell asks who exactly is responsible for her happiness?
She was sold the fairytale of life. That love wins the day. That marriage and children are the natural progression of any relationship. But in 2015 everything changes after her husband Rob takes his own life on a winter’s night, having battled depression and addiction.

With humour and heart, and against the changing landscapes of India, New Zealand and Britain, Poorna tells of how in the midst of rebuilding she starts to redefine what she wants her life to be and what exactly makes a successful, fulfilling life.

Refreshingly honest and heartfelt, Bell’s voice shines in this audiobook. Rich with intimacies that will resonate widely, In Search of Silence is a book to cherish. This is a deeply heartfelt journey.

“With a woman’s ambition to lead comes the risk of being undermined, maligned, side-lined or even physically attacked simply because women are still viewed as “the weaker sex” … being a relatively young female leader in a patriarchal society is fraught with challenges; the first of which is actually getting into office.”

This captivating book is a testament of the power that lies within every woman. Linda urges every reader to embrace their own dreams, overcome obstacles, and create a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
She tells the story of her journey from her upbringing as a child, to a chance encounter with a classmate who made her realise that just putting oneself forward is half the battle in becoming a leader. Linda’s story is intertwined with political events in Zambia from 2011 to 2021, which saw the country on the path towards democratic decline, and the role she and other activists played trying to restore Zambia’s democracy.

Her story touches on difficult topics such as losing a child, mental health, and the sexism faced by women in leadership. It ends with a list of lessons that she has learnt over the years and a call to arms for more women to take up the call to leadership.

‘On Sunday 2 June 2024, I received a phone call that propelled me again into the swirl of a political drama, with plenty of subplots and prima donnas and lesser villains. In just four weeks, it changed the course of the country.’
In Being There, Tony Leon goes behind the scenes, reflecting on how history is made, both here and around the world, through his unique mixture of anecdote and informed opinion. His vantage point ranges from a ringside seat in the formation of the government of national unity (GNU) – recounted in detail here for the first time – to close encounters with the likes of Harry Oppenheimer, Yasser Arafat and Boris Johnson, and reappraisals of FW de Klerk, Nelson Mandela and Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Leon writes of the dangers of modern politics, from the purgatory of social media to the perils of political fundraising in tough times. The challenge of leadership, in a world often led by populist grifters, runs like a golden thread through the book. Leon reflects on the nostalgia we often feel, through pain and pride, for childhood and schooldays, and the many ‘what-ifs’ that inform a well-lived and varied life on the frontlines of South Africa. Written with his customary blend of humour and flair, and with an eye to the future and what the present and the past can tell us about it, Being There is both important and highly readable

Men and women have many wild fears that are very unlikely to ever come true except perhaps in a dream that lurches into a nightmare that seems so real that it must be real.

Perhaps being a fellow traveller in a coach or a train carriage and realising, whether in a sudden jolt or a slowly rising uneasy feeling of horror, that your fellow occupants might not actually be from this world, but more probably from the next, would be such a situation.

We delighted to now put you in such good company! Indeed Amelia Edwards, E F Benson, Violet Hunt, Rudyard Kipling and the incisive talents of many others would definitely like you along for the ride.

These three United States presidents will be discussed in this book combo:
1 - From 1861 till his assassination in 1865, Abraham Lincoln was an American legal representative and statesman who functioned as the 16th president of the United States. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, preserving the Union, eliminating slavery, enhancing the federal government, and helping the economy of the United States. Lincoln grew up on the frontier, mainly in Indiana, and was born into poverty in a log cabin. He was self-taught and went on to end up being a legal representative, Whig Party leader, Illinois state lawmaker, and member of the U.S.A. Congress for Illinois.
2 - George Washington was an American soldier, statesman, and Founding Father who worked as the nation's first president from 1789 to 1797. Washington was called leader of the Continental Army by the Continental Congress, and he led the Patriot forces to triumph in the American Revolutionary War. He also commanded the Constitutional Convention of 1787, which developed the USA Constitution and a federal government. For his different management throughout the nation's developmental years, Washington has been called the "Father of the Nation."
3 - Andrew Jackson was an American attorney, soldier, and statesman who acted as the seventh president of the U.S. from 1829 to 1837. Jackson rose to prominence as a basic in the US Army and served in both homes of Congress before being chosen to the presidency. Jackson, an expansionist president, defended the rights of the "commoner" and the Union against a "corrupt upper class."
