Sinossi

Food Culture Roots explores the fascinating link between culinary traditions and national identity, arguing that what we eat profoundly shapes who we are. The book investigates how specific dishes and culinary practices evolve into symbols of national heritage and collective memory. For instance, the book highlights the evolution of iconic dishes and their social contexts, demonstrating how they become symbolic representations of national heritage. It uses an interdisciplinary approach blending history, anthropology, and sociology to uncover the cultural narratives within our foodways, showing that food acts as a cultural unifier within nations and a marker of distinction between them. The book addresses the impact of globalization on national cuisines, examining culinary fusion and food tourism. It also acknowledges that food traditions are not static but dynamic, constantly evolving to reflect social, economic, and political changes. The book is structured in three parts, beginning with a theoretical framework, then case studies of national cuisines like Italian, Mexican, and Japanese, and concluding with the effects of globalization. It provides a valuable perspective on the evolving influence of food on national identities.

The Ashanti Empire, flourishing from the 17th to the 19th century in what is now Ghana, stands as a testament to the resilience and sophistication of African states. This powerful kingdom was established through a unique blend of indigenous cultural traditions and political innovations, creating a centralized authority that not only governed a vast territory but also unified diverse ethnic groups under a single national identity. At the heart of this unity was the revered Golden Stool, a symbol of divine providence and the collective spirit of the Ashanti people.
Emerging from a landscape rich in natural resources and strategic trade routes, the Ashanti Empire developed robust economic foundations. Gold, kola nuts, and other valuable commodities flowed through well-established networks, facilitating both internal prosperity and external exchanges with neighboring regions and distant trading partners. This economic strength enabled the empire to invest in military expansion and administrative structures that further consolidated its power.
The political organization of the Ashanti Empire was characterized by a sophisticated hierarchy led by the Asantehene, whose authority was both political and spiritual. This dual role was crucial in maintaining social order and ensuring loyalty among the various clans and communities within the empire. The administration was further supported by councils of elders and local chiefs, who played significant roles in the governance process by mediating disputes and enforcing the laws that held the society together.

Around the turn of the nineteenth century, a steady stream of young German poets and thinkers coursed to the town of Jena to make history. The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars had dealt a one-two punch to the dynastic system. Confidence in traditional social, political, and religious norms had been replaced by a profound uncertainty that was as terrifying for some as it was exhilarating for others. Nowhere was the excitement more palpable than among the extraordinary group of poets, philosophers, translators, and socialites who gathered in this Thuringian village.

Jena became the place for the young and intellectually curious, the site of a new departure, of philosophical disruption. Influenced by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, then an elder statesman and artistic eminence, the leading figures among the disruptors—the translator August Wilhelm Schlegel; the philosophers Friedrich "Fritz" Schlegel and Friedrich Schelling; the dazzling, controversial intellectual Caroline Schlegel, married to August; Dorothea Schlegel, a poet and translator, married to Fritz; and the poets Ludwig Tieck and Novalis—resolved to rethink the world, to establish a republic of free spirits. They didn't just question inherited societal traditions; with their provocative views of the individual and of nature, they revolutionized our understanding of freedom and reality.

A guide to authentic North Asian Shamanism, past and present

The word shamanism is frequently bandied about but rarely used accurately. Shamanologist Nicholas Breeze Wood coined the following definition: "A shaman is someone chose by the spirits [typically at/before birth] and who can go into a controlled and repeatable deliberate trance state, during which they: A) experience 'spirit flight,' where they go to meet the spirit worlds and meet spirits, who they either fight with, negotiate with, or trick, in order to create change in this physical world, or B) are often taken over/possessed by the spirits (normally ancestral shaman spirits, or local land spirits) while in this physical world—the spirits using the shaman's voice and body to heal, or give advice to members of the shaman's community. Without the spirits, and their blessing, a shaman can not exist or function. Without the trance state, it is not shamanism."

Author David Shi, for whom these are family traditions, explores the history and practice of shamanism. What is it? Where is it from? How does one become a shaman? Shi guides listeners through unfamiliar territory—the landscape of North Asia—and through what are largely hidden and unfamiliar traditions. Spirit Voices takes and in-depth look at three main cultural shamanic traditions: Turkic, Mongolic, and Tungus.

Two husbands, four trials and one bloody execution: Winner of the 2015 Davitt Award for Best Crime Book (Non-fiction) -- the terrible true story of Louisa Collins.
In January 1889, Louisa Collins, a 41-year-old mother of ten children, became the first woman hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol and the last woman hanged in New South Wales. Both of Louisa's husbands had died suddenly and the Crown, convinced that Louisa poisoned them with arsenic, put her on trial an extraordinary four times in order to get a conviction, to the horror of many in the legal community. Louisa protested her innocence until the end. Much of the evidence against Louisa was circumstantial. Some of the most important testimony was given by her only daughter, May, who was just 10-years-old when asked to take the stand. Louisa Collins was hanged at a time when women were in no sense equal under the law -- except when it came to the gallows. They could not vote or stand for parliament -- or sit on juries. Against this background, a small group of women rose up to try to save Louisa's life, arguing that a legal system comprised only of men -- male judges, all-male jury, male prosecutor, governor and Premier -- could not with any integrity hang a woman. The tenacity of these women would not save Louisa but it would ultimately carry women from their homes all the way to Parliament House. Caroline Overington is the author of eleven books of fiction and non-fiction, including the top-selling THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY psychological crime novel. She has said: 'My hope is that LAST WOMAN HANGED will be read not only as a true crime story but as a letter of profound thanks to that generation of women who fought so hard for the rights we still enjoy today.'Praise for LAST WOMAN HANGED'The story she tells ... is a useful challenge to any tendency to simple moral indignation' -- Beverley Kingston, Sydney Morning Herald'This is a fascinating book, a terrific read, and an excellent reminder of who tells the stories, and whose stories are forgotten' -- Frances Rand, South Coast Register'... what's ... interesting is Caroline Overington's even-handed appraisal of Collins's alleged crime(s) that led her to become the last woman hanged in New South Wales in 1889' -- Launceston Sunday Examiner
