Sinossi

On 10 April 1912, the luxurious ocean liner, RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage bound for New York. Just four days later whilst 400 miles south of Newfoundland she struck an iceberg and within three hours was plummeting to the bottom of the ocean. Written by Michael Swift and Marion Joyce, Little Book of the Titanic explores the ship, its crew, its passengers and its tragically short life in fascinating detail. The book is an ideal prelude to the 100th anniversary of the last voyage of the great liner.

An in-depth look at the British railway company’s celebrated class of steam locomotives, with more than three hundred photos.

Built by Collett in 1927 after pressure to restore the Great Western Railway’s pre-eminence in motive power and cope with increasing postwar traffic to Devon and Cornwall holiday resorts, the thirty Kings were the final development of the Churchward Stars and the 1923 Castles and remained on top-link main line duty until their final replacement by the ‘Western’ class 52 diesel hydraulics in 1962.

This book includes an insight into the thinking of some of Collett’s senior staff at the end of the 1930s and the eventual transformation in the latter years with redraughting and double chimneys. As well as describing their design and construction, the book comprehensively covers their operation and performance, backed up by many recorded logs on all main GW/WR routes over which they were permitted. The author had close experience of the class when working at Old Oak Common between 1957 and 1962, and includes a chapter of his experiences with them, including many footplate trips (as a management trainee, he was greeted with glee by firemen who would hand him the shovel). The book also includes over 300 photographs, one hundred of them in color.

Five generations of Marnie O. Mamminga’s family have been rejuvenated by times together in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. In a series of evocative remembrances accompanied by a treasure trove of vintage family photos, Mamminga takes us to Wake Robin, the cabin her grandparents built in 1929 on Big Spider Lake near Hayward, on land adjacent to Moody’s Camp. Along the way she preserves the spirit and cultural heritage of a vanishing era, conveying the heart of a place and the community that gathered there.Bookended by the close of the logging era and the 1970s shift to modern lake homes, condos, and Jet Skis, the 1920s to 1960s period covered in these essays represents the golden age of Northwoods camps and cabins—a time when retreats such as Wake Robin were the essence of simplicity. In Return to Wake Robin, Mamminga describes the familiar cadre of fishing guides casting their charm, the camaraderie and friendships among resort workers and vacationers, the call of the weekly square dance, the splash announcing a perfectly executed cannonball, the lodge as gathering place. By tracing the history of one resort and cabin, she recalls a time and experience that will resonate with anyone who spent their summers Up North—or wishes they had.

Angkor Wat, in northwest Cambodia, is the world's largest spiritual structure in the shape of a temple complex, with an acreage of 401 +344 acres. A quincunx of 4 towers surrounds a center spire that rises up to a height of 65 meters (213 feet) in the air in the temple's heart. The temple is separated into 3 rectangle-shaped galleries, each of which rises over the one before it. It's surrounded by a 3.6-kilometer-long (24-mile-long) external wall and a five-kilometer-long (three-mile-long) moat.
The temple was built as the state temple for the Khmer Empire at the demand of Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaodharapura (, contemporary Angkor), the Khmer Empire's capital. It was constructed in the early 12th century to honor the Hindu god Vishnu, but by the end of the century, it had been changed to a Buddhist temple.
Angkor Wat is a fascinating structure, dating back hundreds of years, and it’s impressive how much of it has remained intact.
