Sinossi

In Resist Not Evil, Clarence Darrow offers a provocative meditation on violence, punishment, and the moral contradictions of modern civilization. Written in a lucid, argumentative prose characteristic of early twentieth-century public intellectual discourse, the book interrogates the social instinct for retaliation and questions whether coercion can ever produce genuine justice. Darrow's style is measured yet forceful, blending philosophical reflection, legal reasoning, and social criticism. Situated within Progressive Era debates over criminal reform, pacifism, and the ethics of state power, the work stands as a serious challenge to conventional assumptions about law, morality, and human conduct. Darrow was one of America's most renowned defense attorneys, celebrated for his opposition to capital punishment, his defense of labor, and his deep skepticism toward orthodox moral and religious certainties. His courtroom experience exposed him repeatedly to the failures of retributive justice and the social conditions that shape human behavior. These encounters clearly inform this book, in which his humanitarian outlook and deterministic understanding of character emerge with unusual clarity. This is a compelling book for readers interested in legal thought, pacifist ethics, and dissenting American intellectual history. Resist Not Evil rewards serious attention because it remains unsettlingly relevant, urging readers to reconsider whether justice is best served by punishment or by understanding.

A port-worker who helped a gang whisk a shipping container off a wharf in the middle of the night. A crew of corrupt baggage handlers smuggling meth into the country during Covid lockdowns. A shooting inside a 5-star hotel in broad daylight. Turf wars, retaliation, and retribution: new gangs like the Mongols and Comancheros have brought with them better connections with international syndicates, challenging the established gangs like the Head Hunters - so dominant for many years - who have had to up their game in response.

This book consists of four titles, which are:
Franco-Prussian War - The Franco-Prussian War, also known as the Franco-German War or, in France, the War of 1870, was a pivotal conflict between the Second French Empire and the North German Confederation, which was led by the Kingdom of Prussia. This war lasted from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871, and its consequences would shape European geopolitics for decades. The primary cause of the war stemmed from France's desire to reaffirm its dominance in continental Europe, which had been seriously challenged after Prussia's decisive victory over Austria in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. This defeat shifted the balance of power in Europe, making France anxious about its standing.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau - Jean-Jacques Rousseau, born in 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland, was a philosopher, author, and composer whose work had a profound impact on the intellectual and political landscape of the 18th century. He is best known for his political philosophy, which laid the groundwork for many of the principles that influenced the Enlightenment and later shaped the French Revolution.
The Basques - The Basques are an ethnic group indigenous to Southwestern Europe, distinguished by their unique genetic heritage, ancient language (Euskara), and distinct cultural practices. Their homeland, known as the Basque Country (Euskal Herria), spans both sides of the Pyrenees, covering areas in north-central Spain and southwestern France, and lies along the Bay of Biscay.
The Seven Years' War - The Seven Years' War (1756–1763) marked a global struggle for supremacy between two major powers of the time: Great Britain and France. This conflict unfolded across continents and influenced various colonial and European theaters, laying the groundwork for modern geopolitics.

BEING ECLIPSED describes women’s lives under the care of the Church and State in Ireland at the beginning of the mid-19th century throughout the 20th century. It gives an overview of women who had to turn to prostitution out of necessity in order to survive, and also on nuns who were put in charge of them under catholic church rule creating a double-standard. Women were treated as the “Social Evil” when they were not considered pure and innocent by State and Church. This ignorant behaviour let basically to failing women instead of protecting them within society.

Uncovering My Grandfather's Journey from Spy to Children's Book Author —
Why do people keep deep secrets about their lives and ancestry? In Family Declassified, Katherine Fennelly applies her expertise as a social science researcher to answer this question regarding her maternal grandfather, a Jewish Hungarian immigrant who arrived in the US one hundred years ago. A Google search for ‘Francis Kalnay’ yields more than 54,000 results—the vast majority related to the children’s book, Chucaro: Wild Pony of the Pampa, for which he won a Newbery Honor in 1959. Buried deep within the search results are a few references to his years at the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—the precursor to the CIA. However, none describes how a foreign-born sailor overcame a childhood marked by tragedy and became the head of an elite espionage unit for the Allied Forces during World War II. At the OSS Kalnay was one of the few foreign-born Americans informed and ‘indoctrinated’ in what we now know as the ULTRA decrypts, the German Enigma messages that were used to capture or thwart almost all German offensive intelligence activity during the Second World War.
It took several years of reviewing previously unexamined government records and conducting personal interviews and genealogical searches to piece together the life of a man who hid his Jewish identity, the nature of his work as a spy, and the murder of his sister and nephew by Hungarian Nazis. The result is a manuscript that examines the nature of family myths and presents the gripping story of a man whose life was shaped by some of the most extraordinary events of the 20th century.
