Sinossi

Eating sugary food, drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes are legal activities. But politicians still use the law to discourage them. They raise their price, prohibit or limit their advertisement, restrict where they can be sold and consumed, and sometimes ban them outright. These politicians thereby violate John Stuart Mill’s famous principle that people should be free to do whatever they like, provided they harm no one but themselves. Why? What can justify these paternalistic policies? Killjoys reviews the full range of justifications that have been offered: from the idea that people are too irrational to make sensible decisions to the idea that they are effectively compelled by advertising to harm themselves. The author, Christopher Snowdon, exposes the logical or factual errors that undermine each purported justification. He thus provides a comprehensive critique of the health paternalism that has been adopted by governments around the world.

A Sociopolitical & Religious look at the world & where it is headed, with respect to the actions of a small group of extremely dangerous & ambitious people.THE CONSTITUTION & THE DANGERS OF NEPOTISMA constitution is a document that embodies the laws, beliefs, and principles that govern a country, state, or system. In a multi-racial,multi-religious society, this document should guarantee the conformance of actions of anyone holding office at all levels. Whether the president or prime minister, the constitution stipulates details of due process in the exercise of powers associated with that office regardless of the person's convictions or extremist beliefs in all forms.A constitution is only amended if all stakeholders of government decide to do so. If all arms of government decide that it is in the best interest of society for such an amendment to be made, the United States second amendment, which stipulates that American citizens havethe right to bear arms, is a recent example of this. Also, in 2019 / 2020, Russia, its president Vladimir Putin is calling for a constitutional amendment that could allow him to remain as Russia's president indefinitely! The effect is the resignation of his prime minister and his entire government. What happens if a president has all and only his men, allies, or stooges at key positions of government? Then a constitutional review would be possible regardless of the

Meet the inspirational students: This narrative tells the story of seven women and one man at the heart of a sit-in protesting decreased enrollment and hiring of African Americans at Swarthmore College and demanding a Black Studies curriculum. The book, written by the former students themselves, also includes autobiographical chapters, providing a unique cross-sectional view into the lives of young people during the Civil Rights era.Correcting media representation: For years the media and some in the school community portrayed the peaceful protest in a negative light—this collective narrative provides a very necessary and overdue retelling of the revolution that took place at Swarthmore College in 1969. The group of eight student protestors have only recently begun to receive credit for the school's greater inclusiveness, as well as the influence their actions had on universities around the country.Stories that inspire change: This book chronicles the historical eight-day sit-in at Swarthmore College, and the authors also include untold stories about their family backgrounds and their experiences as student activists. They share how friendships, out-of-the-box alliances, and a commitment to moral integrity strengthened them to push through and remain resilient in the face of adversity.

“Closely argued and conditionally apocalyptic . . . Gorenberg outlines many reasonable steps Israel should take to disentangle religion from the state.” —Jeffrey Goldberg, The New York Times Book Review

Prominent Israeli journalist Gershom Gorenberg offers a penetrating and provocative look at how the balance of power in Israel has shifted toward extremism, threatening the prospects for peace and democracy as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensifies. Informing his examination using interviews in Israel and the West Bank and with access to previously classified Israeli documents, Gorenberg delivers an incisive discussion of the causes and trends of extremism in Israel’s government and society. Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, writes, “until I read The Unmaking of Israel, I didn’t think it could be possible to feel more despairing, and then more terribly hopeful, about Israel, a place that I began at last, under the spell of Gershom Gorenberg’s lucid and dispassionate yet intensely personal writing, to understand.”

“At the core of the book lies a terrifying analogy: Israel as Pakistan, a country whose government has empowered a lawless, fanatical religious movement now subverting the very state that empowered it. Is the analogy apt today? No, but Gorenberg makes a frighteningly convincing case that it might be soon.” —Peter Beinart, Newsweek

“Gorenberg provides a deft but penetrating and highly nuanced account of the recent history and current politics of Israel . . . He issues a heartfelt and heart-rending plea for the repair of the Jewish democracy.” —The Jewish Journal

“Sure to raise contention, a strong dissenting voice from a burdened land where dissent is not simply tolerated, but a way of life.” —Kirkus Reviews

What pop culture from The Hobbit to The Office reveals about modern politics—from the authors of Homer Simpson Marches on Washington: “Fun and engaging.” —William Irwin, author of Black Sabbath and Philosophy

It’s said that the poet Homer educated ancient Greece. Joseph J. Foy and Timothy M. Dale have assembled a team of notable scholars who argue, quite persuasively, that Homer Simpson and his ilk are educating America and offering insights into the social order and the human condition.

Following Homer Simpson Goes to Washington (winner of the John G. Cawelti Award for Best Textbook or Primer on American and Popular Culture) and Homer Simpson Marches on Washington, this exceptional volume reveals how books like J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, movies like Avatar and Star Wars, and television shows like The Office and Firefly define Americans’ perceptions of society. The authors expand the discussion to explore the ways in which political theories play out in popular culture.

Homer Simpson Ponders Politics includes a foreword by fantasy author Margaret Weis (coauthor/creator of the Dragonlance novels and game world) and is divided according to eras and themes in political thought: The first section explores civic virtue, applying the work of Plato and Aristotle to modern media. Part 2 draws on the philosophy of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Smith as a framework for understanding the role of the state. Part 3 explores the work of theorists such as Kant and Marx, and the final section investigates the ways in which movies and newer forms of electronic media either support or challenge the underlying assumptions of the democratic order. The result is an engaging read for students as well as anyone interested in popular culture.

"Perpetual Peace" is a philosophical work written by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant in 1795. In this work, Kant argues that peace can only be achieved through a world order based on international law, democratic governance, and the promotion of free trade.
Kant believed that war was a result of a flawed system of international relations, where states pursued their own self-interests without regard for the interests of other nations. He argued that in order to establish a lasting peace, a system of international law must be established that would regulate the behavior of nations and prevent them from going to war.
Kant also believed that a world federation of nations would be necessary to ensure peace. This federation would be based on democratic governance, where each nation would have an equal say in decisions that affected the world as a whole. Kant believed that this would help to ensure that the interests of all nations were taken into account, and that no one nation could dominate the others.
Finally, Kant argued that free trade was essential for peace. He believed that by promoting economic interdependence between nations, free trade would create incentives for nations to work together and avoid war.
Overall, Kant's "Perpetual Peace" is a seminal work in the history of political philosophy, and continues to be influential today in debates about international relations and the pursuit of peace.
