Irish Times: Books to Look Out for in 2025
This collection of stories, written especially for BBC Radio 4, includes a ten-part sequence: 'The Circus', set around Cliftonville Circus, where five roads meet in North Belfast.
It's five minutes from the nationalist Troubles flashpoint of Ardoyne, where Paul grew up. It's close to Holy Cross Girls' School, where protests targeting primary school children drew international attention. The Circus is situated in the poorest part of Belfast – it is also the most divided.
Each road leads to a different area – a different class – a different religion. The Circus explores where old Belfast clashes with the new around acceptance, change, class and diversity. But this is 2024 and a fresh energy exists.
Other stories include 'Tickles', a story about a man visiting his mother in a dementia ward where he finds he is the one who had forgotten important things; 'Cuckoo', about a man's collapse and surgery – where he feels something more sinister has happened to him; and 'Daddy Christmas', where a gay man writes a letter to the son he never had.

A little book with a surprisingly big heart.
A kidnapped princess and a killer porter, a naked artist and a neonatal astronaut . . . The lives of strangers intertwine, moments become lifetimes, in their unconscious quest to let go of grief and hold on to the precious.
Beautifully imagined, A Pocket For Biscuits seeks a deeper understanding of ourselves in the every day, inspiring a gentle compassion for the disconnected and voiceless.
This is a rare gem that sparkles with courage and hope, subtly lit by incidental kinships you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

"There's a new world master among us, and her name is Can Xue." —Robert Coover

Two young girls sneak onto the grounds of a hospital, where they find a disturbing moment of silence in a rose garden. A couple grows a plant that blooms underground, invisibly, to their long-time neighbor's consternation. A cat worries about its sleepwalking owner, who receives a mysterious visitor while he's asleep. After a ten-year absence, a young man visits his uncle, on the twenty-fourth floor of a high-rise that is floating in the air, while his ugly cousin hesitates on the stairs . . .

Can Xue is a master of the dreamscape, crafting stories that inhabit the space where fantasy and reality, time and timelessness, the quotidian and the extraordinary, meet. The stories in this striking and lyrical new collection—populated by old married couples, children, cats, and nosy neighbors, the entire menagerie of the everyday—reaffirm Can Xue's reputation as one of the most innovative Chinese writers in a generation.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri on the 30th November 1835 and is far better known by his pen name of Mark Twain. An American writer and humorist of the first order he is perhaps best known for his novels ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and its sequel ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ which are often described with that mythic line The Great American Novel.
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which would later provide the backdrop to these great novels. Apprenticed to a printer he also became a typesetter and then a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi. Later, heading west with his brother Orion to make his fortune, he failed at gold mining and instead turned to journalism and thence his true calling as a writer of humorous stories where his wit and humor sparkled from every paragraph, his craft evident with every page and punctured target.
A staunch supporter of copyright protections this helped him keep much of the wealth his writing created, though much money was also lost on investments that he pursued in his love for science and technology as well as investing in his own inventions.
Twain was born during a visit by Halley’s comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it as well. He died the day after its subsequent return on 21st April 1910, at his house, Stormfield, located in Redding, Connecticut.
