Sinossi

War in Heaven is a novel written by Charles Williams and first published in 1930. It is a supernatural thriller that revolves around the quest for the Holy Grail, the legendary cup used by Jesus Christ during the Last Supper, and its significance in the spiritual realm.

The story is set in an English village called Fardles, where a young clergyman named Dr. John Redpath discovers that the local church's ancient altar stone is in fact the Grail. However, a group of dark forces, including a powerful sorcerer named Simon Leclerc, also becomes aware of the Grail's location and seeks to obtain it for their own purposes.

As the struggle for the Grail intensifies, the forces of good and evil clash in a cosmic battle that takes place both on earth and in the heavens. Angels, demons, and other supernatural beings are drawn into the conflict, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

"War in Heaven" is considered one of Williams' most significant works, showcasing his unique blend of Christian theology, occultism, and fantasy. It has been praised for its intricate plot, vivid imagery, and exploration of spiritual themes, including redemption, temptation, and the nature of evil.

Charles Williams (1886-1945) was a British writer, theologian, and literary critic who was associated with the Inklings, a literary group that included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. He was born in London and attended University of London where he studied theology and literature.

Williams wrote poetry, novels, plays, and literary criticism, and his works often dealt with themes related to Christian theology, mysticism, and the occult. He is best known for his seven supernatural thrillers, including "War in Heaven," "Many Dimensions," and "The Place of the Lion." His writing was known for its complex plots, vivid imagery, and unusual mix of Christian theology and occultism.

Aside from his literary career, Williams was also a member of the Golden Dawn, a secret society that practiced occult rituals, and he had a particular interest in the esoteric traditions of Christianity. He worked as an editor at the Oxford University Press and also lectured on literature and theology.

In this new thriller from the author of The Yards, a cop tracks the kidnapped teenage daughter of a wealthy developer in a transitioning Rust Belt town.

A new Nissan plant is coming to the depressed Rust Belt town of Baxter, and Captain Delia Mariola has been busy cleaning up the crime-addled city ever since the deal was announced. But when the fifteen-year-old daughter of the lead bidder on the construction project—a wealthy out-of-towner—suddenly disappears, and it becomes clear that a professional kidnapping ring may be responsible, Delia realizes that the factory's influx of cash could bring with it an entirely new sort of danger, never before considered in this working class milieu.

Though Elizabeth's abduction was well-planned and bearing the mark of an experienced team, her captors could not have anticipated the quick and clever brilliance of the exceptionally smart teen. From the trunk of the car where she is held, she soon devises a clever trick to get cryptic messages to those who love her back down the highway in Baxter. The only problem is that the messages might be too cryptic even for their recipients to decipher. If Delia has any hope of bringing the girl home unharmed, she'll have to crack the code and discover the meaning behind the message. And unless she does it fast, there may be nobody left to save . . .

Samatha, it turns out, is an heiress, the inheritor of a fortune left by a wealthy relative, and so the attempt at the cat's life, made right after they arrive, comes as a shock. The cat survives, but unfortunately, Lilly, murdered soon thereafter, is not so lucky.

By the time the police arrive, the clues are already falling into place. The source of Lilly's trouble is revealed to be a gambling debt incurred during an attempt to cheat at bridge, and the suspects in her slaying quickly pile up. But then another corpse is discovered, buried in the nearby sand, and it becomes clear that the killing spree concerns more than just the young lady's personal money trouble. With the authorities distracted by lurid details, it's up to Rachel and her furry friend to uncover the subtleties containing the solution to the puzzle.

A prototypical early "cat mystery," written before the subgenre became a staple of cozy mystery fiction, The Cat Saw Murder is an entertaining and endlessly surprising whodunit.
