Sinossi

Art, with its finite means, cannot hope to record the infinite variety and com-plexity of Nature, and so contents itself with a partial statement, addressing this to the imagination for the full and perfect meaning. This inadequation, and the artificial ad-justments which it involves, are tolerated by right of what is known as artistic convention; and as each art has its own particular limitations, so each has its own particular conventions. Sculpture reproduces the forms of Nature, but discards the color without any shock to our ideas of verity; Painting gives us the color, but not the third dimension, and we are satisfied; and Architecture ispurely conventional, since it does not even aim at the imitation of natural form.

The Conventions of Line Drawing, Of the kindred arts which group themselves under the head of Painting, none is based on such broad conventions as that with which we are immediately concerned—the art of Pen Drawing. In this medium, Nature's variety of color, when not positively ignored, is suggested by means of sharp black lines, of varying thickness, placed more or less closely together upon white paper; while natural form depends primarily for its representation upon arbitrary boundary lines. There is, of course, no authority in Na-ture for a positive outline:

We see objects only by the difference in color of the other objects behind and around them. The technical capacity of the pen and ink medium, however, does not provide a value corresponding to every natural one, so that a broad interpretation has to be adopted which eliminates the less positive values; and, that form may not likewise be sacrificed, the outline becomes necessary, that light objects may stand relieved against light. This outline is the most characteristic, as it is the most indispensable, of the conventions of line drawing.

To seek to abolish it only involves a resort to expedients no less artificial, and the results of all such attempts, dependent as they necessarily are upon elaboration of color, and a general indirectness of method, lack some of the best characteristics of pen drawing. More frequently, however, an elaborate color-scheme is merely a straining at the technical limitations of the pen in an effort to render the greatest possible number of values.

It may be worth while to inquire whether excellence in pen drawing consists in thus dispensing with its recognized conventions, or in otherwise taxing the technical re-sources of the instrument. This involves the question of Style,—of what characteristic pen methods are,—a question which we will briefly consider...

One sunny day in the season of summer, Anter the ant was going about his daily business throughout the forest. It was still morning. The sun he knew was going to get hotter than it currently was throughout midday. He often went throughout the forest to get food to eat. His favorite foods to eat were strawberries, sugarcane, bread crumbs, mangos, and anything that was sweet and delicious that could be eaten.
Luck was on his side today, as he saw a field with some freshly cut sugarcane. He just liked the sweet taste of it. He knew that the men in the forest and village liked the taste of sugarcane. He knew that it also gave them a lot of energy. As a small ant that was always busy storing up food for a storm, a rainy day, or even a hurricane, he needed lots of energy. He went by the field and started to eat in peace and joy.

Charles Featherstone gleefully narrates the uproarious finale of A’Beckett’s Comic History, skewering Britain’s glorious descent into chaos after Queen Anne. Witness thick-accented German kings fumbling through English, ministers auctioning the nation’s dignity, and England drowning in get-rich-quick scams – all while crinolines expanded and sense evaporated.
meet George I, shuffling mistresses in and out of palace cupboards while dodging Jacobite assassins; his son George II, shrieking battlefield commands in mangled English (and reportedly dropping his trousers for "luck" mid-cavalry charge); and Britain’s "first" Prime Minister, Robert Walpole, who perfected bribery as statecraft with the immortal quip: "Every man has his price... and mine is remarkably low!"
Witness the South Sea Bubble—a frenzy of greed that saw nobles and cobblers alike betting fortunes on "vapor and paperwork" until the economy imploded (though London’s wig-makers somehow thrived). Hold your breath as Bonnie Prince Charlie’s tartan-clad Jacobite rebels storm south in the ’45 Rising, only to collapse into farce when the prince reportedly fled a dessert fork "quivering in his pudding." And marvel at Britain’s global gambles: empires built on naval mutinies over rancid limes, colonial cash-grabs, and taxes on everything from windows to gin—all while Germanic kings gazed wistfully toward Saxony.
Perfect for fans of Blackadder the Third and The Perfect for fans of Blackadder the Third and the screwball intrigue of The Favourite, this riotous finale proves Britain’s "Enlightenment" was really enlightened self-interest—a stumble toward greatness paved with blunders, bribes, and enough powdered wigs to choke a horse.
