In "Fichte's Science of Knowledge," Charles Carroll Everett delves into the intricate philosophies of Johann Gottlieb Fichte, a pivotal figure in German Idealism. The book meticulously analyzes Fichte's foundational ideas, articulating how his concepts of self-consciousness and the interconnectedness of the individual and the absolute influence subsequent philosophical thought. Everett's literary style combines rigorous analytical discourse with accessible language, making the complex ideas of Fichte understandable to both scholars and general readers. The work is set against the backdrop of the Enlightenment, exploring the tensions between rationalism and empiricism, and highlighting Fichte's attempts to navigate these paradigms through a unique epistemological framework. Charles Carroll Everett was an esteemed philosopher and educator whose extensive background in philosophy and history profoundly shaped his scholarly pursuits. His academic journey, enriched by profound analyses of Kant and Hegel, led him to the exploration of Fichte's works. Through his thorough investigation of Fichte's texts, Everett aims to illuminate the subtle nuances oft overlooked in traditional interpretations, making a significant contribution to the understanding of German Idealism. I highly recommend "Fichte's Science of Knowledge" to those interested in the evolution of philosophical thought. Everett's insightful commentary and comprehensive examination provide invaluable perspectives for students, scholars, and anyone eager to grapple with the intricate connections between selfhood and knowledge in Fichte's philosophy.

The gripping, untold stories of three unsung Black physicians and their critical contributions to the field of medicine and American culture, from the National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author of Medical ApartheidBetween 1847 and 1952, three New York City doctors transformed medicine, catalyzed racial equity, elevated American culture, then were all but lost to history—until now.James McCune Smith, MD., Rudolph Fisher, MD., and Louis T. Wright, MD each helped shape our nation and advance medicine while sharing overlapping passions—an uncompromising, even militant opposition to racial fetters; medical research that refused racial denigration; and literary acumen. While not strictly contemporaries, they were bound across time through obstacles that parallel those we confront today. Medical exclusion and disparagement, rampant healthcare inequities paired with housing segregation, racial abuse and police violence, lynching, the suppression of Black history —and even racial bars to higher medical education—that mirrored today’s challenges to affirmative action. In this comprehensive slice of previously unrevealed history, renowned writer and scholar Harriet Washington sheds light on Black physicians who pioneered important medical achievements that benefit the health of all Americans. Renaissance Men draws parallels between contemporary and historical medical exclusion and healthcare inequities and reveals a powerful argument for supporting current medical aspirants of color. Surfacing this long-buried history shows us what genius we stand to lose if medicine doesn’t rectify its current course of racial exclusion.

The Dhammapada Vol 4 - The Way...

The Dhammapada is a collection of sayings of the Gautama the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures. This is volume four of a 12-volume series of Osho Talks, where Osho brings Buddha's Dhammapada into the 21st century, opening them for a new understanding for contemporary mankind.
In alternating chapters, Osho comments on specific sutras of Buddha and responds to questions from his audience, deepening the understanding of these timeless works. "My talking on Buddha is not just a commentary: It is creating a bridge. Buddha is one of the most important masters who has ever existed on the Earth - incomparable, unique."
The setting of these talks is an open-air auditorium at the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune, India. Osho and his audience sit surrounded by trees, and the elements of nature - the chirping of birds, wind, and the cracking bamboos as well as the distant sound of the local Pune-Mumbai morning train - are all parts of these recordings and give them a truly existential flavor.
Osho employs his penetrating insight and wonderful humor to remove the dust of many misunderstandings gathered on Buddha's teachings and again emphasizes meditation over dogma, meditation being Buddha's greatest contribution to the development of human consciousness.
"Buddha transformed the word meditation. Meditation had always been something of the mind, and Buddha brought a new quality, so totally new, diametrically opposite to the old meaning: He said meditation means a state of no mind. It is not concentration; it is not contemplation. It is not thinking; it is not thinking about God. It is not even prayer, because thinking is of the head, intellectual; prayer is emotional. That is another side of the head, not very far away from it - a different language used by another part of the head."
Osho Talks are "meditating talks", allowing the listener an experience of meditation. "These words of Buddha come from eternal silence. They can reach you only if you receive them in silence."
