    The Interrogation - Poems

This surreal, darkly humorous, and relentlessly probing poetry collection resides at “the disorienting juncture between fairy tale and nightmare” (Publishers Weekly).

Suffused in psychology, uncertainty, and desire, Michael Bazzett’s The Interrogation is an unsparingly honest catechism of the self. In the title poem, a speaker—at once questioner and questioned—insistently asks: Who? What? Where? Why? Why our cruelty? Why our loneliness? And how do we connect?

These poems read like disorienting fables and seemingly familiar folktales. In them, we are escorted to dreamlike cities, brought into the rich earth under a simple mattress, and drawn inside the mind, where “Nobody fails at meditation / like I do.”

  • Elegies & Laments - Poetic tributes to the dead - cover

    Elegies & Laments - Poetic...

In these more modern time perhaps our first thoughts of an Elegy or a Lament is for someone’s passing. Wreathed in grief and death we think of a headstone on a silent grave and the memories that shelter within our hearts, slowly receding from one generation to the next, as an often lonely voice extols the virtues and traits of the one who has passed.

But these two very early forms of poetry, dating back to at least Ovid and probably further, are also surprising in their lyrical touch. These are not just mournful and sad but also whimsical or rich with celebration and tribute as they journey through joy, laughter, love, tears and comfort.

Our Classic Poets, who have specifically chosen to include the form in the title of their work, include the likes of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Thomas Chatterton, Aphra Behn, Rainer Maria Rilke, Radclyffe Hall and many others of equal measure are always surprising in their views, their analysis and their sharing of words and thoughts, offering feelings that mirror our own and provide a balm of many hues for our wounded and tender souls.

Fifty Shades of Summer - 50 of...

Nature loosens her limbs, increases her ambition. Summer’s work is intense with colour, she paints with a brighter light. The hours of night diminish, quickly shrink. She has no need for rest but a yearning to work. Vibrant swathes of shooting, pulsing colour almost overwhelm. Her tempo is beyond our awed imagination.

Inspired, the air, the sea, the parching earth bring elemental strength. Summer storms, forest fires. The endless blue of sky, of ocean water will not still her work. Mistress of all. Our poets merely the inky pens of her will.

In fifty poems we take you on their inspiring journey, reflecting on the miracle of summer.
