~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
Cyprus, Isabelle and I lay across my bed side-by-side on our backs. I was positioned between them and took comfort in their warmth. I’d managed to reign in my emotions and steady my breathing. While I traced the designs of the ceiling with my eyes, a fond memory returned to me.
“I remember…one day Jeremi came home from work with six bottles of wine and a deck of playing cards. He set up a table with a huge plate of food and the drinks in this room, made sure Victoria and I were comfortable, and then ordered the servants to leave us be for the night.” I smiled, recalling how excited he’d been.
“What did you do?” Isabelle asked.
“I’m guessing Victoria taught him how to play Finan.” Cyprus replied.
“You’re right, she did.” I nodded. “And Jeremi wanted to bring me in on the game--with two new rules.”
“How do you play normally?” Isabelle asked, toying with a loose strand of my hair.
“Each card is assigned a value, and your end goal is to have the lowest score of everyone.” Cyprus summarized.
“Seems simple enough. What were the new rules?” She looked at me.
“If you win, you drink half of your glass.” I giggled. “And if you empty your glass, you lose an article of clothing.”
“That’s a lot of wine to get through,” Isabelle laughed, “and not very many pieces of clothing.”
“And playing a game that’s extremely in Victoria’s favor.” Cyprus joined her. “We played it all the time in Lorelyn.”
“Learning was easy, mastering it was harder, and I’m certain they let me win more than a few times. We spent the entire night in here, laughing and draining more wine than I think I’ve ever consumed in my life.” I remembered we’d all awoken on the floor the next morning, haphazardly covered in the blankets from my bed. Not one of us remembered how we had finished the night. But…that part never mattered. I just wanted to be near them always.
“Josselyn, tell me,” Isabelle whispered, “what is it like…to be a Ring?”
“Isabelle…? Are you sure?” I turned toward her, only to have her lips meet mine.
“Yes. Show me,” she murmured against my mouth, “both of you.”
    The creator of the internationally popular, multiple award-winning blog MsAfropolitan applies an Africa-centered feminist sensibility to issues of racism and sexism, challenging our illusions about oppression and liberation and daring women to embrace their power.
    Sensuous Knowledge is a collection of thought provoking essays that explore questions central to how we see ourselves, our history, and our world.
    What does it mean to be oppressed?
    What does it mean to be liberated?
    Why do women choose to follow authority even when they can be autonomous?
    What is the cost of compromising one’s true self?
    What narratives particularly subjugate women and people of African heritage?
    What kind of narrative can heal and empower?
    As she considers these questions, Salami offers fresh insights on key cultural issues that impact women’s lives, including power, beauty, and knowledge. She also examines larger subjects, such as Afrofuturism, radical Black feminism, and gender politics, all with a historical outlook that is also future oriented. Combining a storyteller’s narrative playfulness and a social critic’s intellectual rigor, Salami draws upon a range of traditions and ideologies, feminist theory, popular culture—including insights from Ms. Lauryn Hill, Beyoncé, Audre Lorde, Toni Morrison, and others—science, philosophy, African myths and origin stories, and her own bold personal narrative to establish a language for change and self-liberation.
    Sensuous Knowledge inspires reflection and challenge us to formulate or own views. Using ancestral knowledge to steer us toward freedom, Salami reveals the ways that women have protested over the years in large and small ways—models that inspire and empower us to define our own sense of womanhood today.
    In this riveting meditation, Salami ask women to break free of the prison made by ingrained male centric biases, and build a house themselves—a home that can nurture us all.
    George Eliot - A Very Short...
    George Eliot pushed the boundaries of fiction and of Victorian society. She was an extraordinary woman whose unconventional life meant that she was judged harshly by family, friends, and strangers. Eliot wanted to draw attention to the feelings and motivations of ordinary people, so that we might feel more generous towards each other. But human beings are complex, and to capture that complexity Eliot drew on an astonishing range of philosophical, psychological, and scientific ideas. She hoped her work might do good, yet she was clear-eyed about the limits of both human sympathy and the novel.In this Very Short Introduction, Juliette Atkinson explores the ideas feeding Eliot's fiction and looks at the literary techniques—such as narrative voice, genre, imagery, structure, and syntax—that she used to embody them. These shape her recurrent themes: the stifling nature of gossip, the hardships experienced by commonplace individuals, the duty of practicing fellow-feeling and the difficulty of doing so. Atkinson argues that George Eliot was a social outcast who became a sage, through the creation of some of the most influential novels ever written in English.
