~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
Cyprus, Isabelle and I lay across my bed side-by-side on our backs. I was positioned between them and took comfort in their warmth. I’d managed to reign in my emotions and steady my breathing. While I traced the designs of the ceiling with my eyes, a fond memory returned to me.
“I remember…one day Jeremi came home from work with six bottles of wine and a deck of playing cards. He set up a table with a huge plate of food and the drinks in this room, made sure Victoria and I were comfortable, and then ordered the servants to leave us be for the night.” I smiled, recalling how excited he’d been.
“What did you do?” Isabelle asked.
“I’m guessing Victoria taught him how to play Finan.” Cyprus replied.
“You’re right, she did.” I nodded. “And Jeremi wanted to bring me in on the game--with two new rules.”
“How do you play normally?” Isabelle asked, toying with a loose strand of my hair.
“Each card is assigned a value, and your end goal is to have the lowest score of everyone.” Cyprus summarized.
“Seems simple enough. What were the new rules?” She looked at me.
“If you win, you drink half of your glass.” I giggled. “And if you empty your glass, you lose an article of clothing.”
“That’s a lot of wine to get through,” Isabelle laughed, “and not very many pieces of clothing.”
“And playing a game that’s extremely in Victoria’s favor.” Cyprus joined her. “We played it all the time in Lorelyn.”
“Learning was easy, mastering it was harder, and I’m certain they let me win more than a few times. We spent the entire night in here, laughing and draining more wine than I think I’ve ever consumed in my life.” I remembered we’d all awoken on the floor the next morning, haphazardly covered in the blankets from my bed. Not one of us remembered how we had finished the night. But…that part never mattered. I just wanted to be near them always.
“Josselyn, tell me,” Isabelle whispered, “what is it like…to be a Ring?”
“Isabelle…? Are you sure?” I turned toward her, only to have her lips meet mine.
“Yes. Show me,” she murmured against my mouth, “both of you.”
    The Radical Mind is a groundbreaking analysis of the origins of the Christian Right, whose political victories are radically reshaping the landscape of American society. Scholars and the public alike have traditionally regarded the New Right and the Christian Right as separate movements. Insofar as both are conservative efforts, most people view them as reactionary and driven by a culture-war backlash against liberal changes to society.
    Chelsea Ebin's The Radical Mind aims to overturn this consensus. Through a close analysis of New Right architects Connaught Marshner and Paul Weyrich (who is often seen as secular but was a committed Catholic), this book explores the way conservative Catholics and Protestants overcame their long-standing antipathy to form a political coalition—what Ebin calls the New Christian Right. Drawing on extensive archival research, Ebin shows how the movement’s key architects infused right-wing activism with religion.
    The radical aims of the New Christian Right have been obscured by the way they cultivated a shared identity of victimhood and manipulated the discourse about backlash to create a nostalgic idea of the past that they then leveraged to justify their right-wing policy goals. The Catholic-Protestant alliance constructed an imagined past that they projected into the future as their ideal vision of society. Ebin calls this strategy "prefigurative traditionalism"—a paradoxical prefiguring of a manufactured past. Using this tactic, the New Christian Right coalition disguised the radicality of its politics by framing their aims as reactionary and defensive rather than proactive and offensive.
    In the 8th and 9th centuries, among Eastern Slavs, the ancestral way of life was thoroughly destroyed, leading to the birth of a new state. Neighboring communities could no longer be managed on the basis of old tribal customs. All this required the creation of new rules and norms. In the ninth century, the gradual strengthening of the Kniaz’s power continued. This process was accelerated under the influence of external factors: in the north of the East European Plain the raids of the Varangians became a constant phenomenon, and in the south the hostility of the Slavic and Turkic tribes increased dramatically. Between 862 and 882, the majority of East Slavic tribes were united by Kiev, and under the rule of Kiev, a Russian state (Kievan Rus’) was established. It was an early feudal state since it preserved the vestiges of the tribal system: the elements of military democracy. At the head of the state was the Grand Prince of Kiev, under which there was a council of the most distinguished and powerful princes.
    Unfortunately for this fledgling state, it would not be long before their immense territory would attract one of medieval history’s most infamous military machines.
    Though history is usually written by the victors, the lack of a particularly strong writing tradition from the Mongols ensured that history was largely written by those who they vanquished. Because of this, their portrayal in the West and the Middle East has been extraordinarily (and in many ways unfairly) negative for centuries, at least until recent revisions to the historical record. The Mongols have long been depicted as wild horse-archers galloping out of the dawn to rape, pillage, murder and enslave, but the Mongol army was a highly sophisticated, organized and incredibly adaptive and innovative institution, as witnessed by the fact that it was successful in conquering a diverse array of enemies across several continents.
    Description:
    Cutting into the Silence is a contemplative audiobook that blends personal memoir with reflection on care, resilience, and what it means to remain human in systems driven by efficiency and control.
    Narrated with restraint and clarity, the book follows an oncology surgeon’s journey from a small mountain village in Turkey to a medical career in Belgium. Along the way, listeners are invited into moments of vulnerability, ethical doubt, and quiet determination—both in the operating room and beyond it.
    Rather than offering prescriptions, the audiobook creates space for reflection. It introduces the Zigana model as a compass for growth — rooted in motivation, curiosity, and emotional and social intelligence—while remaining grounded in lived experience and patient stories.
    Listener perspective:
    “Contemplative memoir paralleling medical practice with the human experience.” — BookLife Reviews
    “A powerful reminder that caring for others starts with understanding them as people, not cases.” — Readers’ Favorite
    “A compassionate and thoughtful guide to reclaiming one’s humanity in a systems-driven world.” — Kirkus Reviews
    This audiobook is for listeners interested in healthcare, leadership, ethics, and personal growth—and for anyone reflecting on how to live and work with integrity inside complex systems.
    This is book 6 in The Ellis Chronicles.
    Book Excerpt:
    Katie asked again, "Who were you talking to? Ellis... I'm worried about you and don't want to see you get hurt."
    Ellis turned toward her pushing her aside, telling her, "No one could ever hurt me as bad as you did by screwing around with Pam."
    Katie caught Ellis by the arm spinning her toward her, causing them to come only inches from each other. Ellis started to protest but couldn't seem to get the words out of her mouth with Katie's lips that close to her. Katie seemed to be shocked by the closeness too, and as she leaned in to kiss Ellis they immediately fell into each others arms. Ellis pinned Katie against the wall as they kissed, and her hands began exploring the body of the woman that was her lover for over three years.
    Katie moaned under her touch and wrapped a leg around her pulling her in as close as she could........
