Synopsis

BUBBLY, BICYCLES AND BRIDES showcases a collection of mystery and crime stories set in Minnesota in days past.

“Long Night’s Moon” features romance and crime both, set on the first New Year’s Eve after the repeal of Prohibition. In “Tillie’s Big Race”, a young woman training for the big time gets caught up in a bank robbery when gangsters blow through her town. “The Elopement” tells the story of a gangster’s daughter on the eve of her dreaded wedding. “Dance Til You Drop” explores the world of marathon dance competitions and the poor souls willing to endure anything just for a chance at the cash prize.

And “On a Cold Winter’s Night” goes further into the past for a darker kind of Christmas story.

Five tales of bubbly, bicycles and brides, all guaranteed to delight you.

The sea is not a playground. A huge wave lifted the stern of the coaster, propeller and rudder, out of the froth and oil just as Bill Hawken tried to swing the Tamar Class lifeboat into a better position…Set in Cornwall, the crew never know what dangers, or even stranger outcomes, a call for a lifeboat launch will bring. The complexities of family life, interaction with hostile holiday-home owners, criminal activity, peer group tensions coupled with the day-to-day business of harbour life and other events, make for an exciting living.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

Robert Barr was born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 16th September 1849. Five years later the family emigrated to a farm near Muirkirk in Upper Canada.
His early years were uneventful as the family settled into their new lives and Barr began his education.
A career path as a teacher opened up for him and, by 1874, he had been appointed as headmaster at the Central School at Windsor. Concurrently he also wrote travel and humourous articles for magazines. Within two years their success in the regional periodicals encouraged him to change careers to become a reporter and columnist.
In August 1876, at age 27, he married Eva Bennett and they began a family.
A half decade later he was the exchange editor of the ‘Free Press’ but decided to relocate to London to establish an English edition and to write fiction, which both met with much success.
Over the years he was a prolific writer and in 1892, along with Jerome K Jerome, he established ‘The Idler’ magazine and, just after the turn of the century, became its sole proprietor.
Although a number of his crime novels and short stories are parodies on Sherlock Holmes and other best-selling detectives of the time, he also wrote short stories across a whole range of subjects and genres usually with intriguing ideas and many laced with wit and humour.
Robert Barr died at his home in Woldingham, Surrey of heart disease on the 21st October 1912. He was 63.

Chosen as one of the ‘best new book releases’ by COSMOPOLITAN
A ‘best summer read’ by ELLE MAGAZINE
When you look at a woman, who do you see?
“Every aspect of her body or personality was up for inspection: too big, too small, too available, too hidden, too much, not enough.”
A wedding day brings back memories of sisterhood and betrayals; a motorway service station is the site of explosive violence, but also strange bonds; a trip home forces a reminder of a life-changing, lost friendship; a woman confronts her own infidelity; an artist celebrates a life spent in observation.
This debut collection movingly explores how women and girls are looked at, look at one another, and look at themselves, and how living as an object can shape their passions, fears, and joys. With a clear eye and dark humour, Danielle Pender considers sex, parenting, grief and class as lenses for the ways in which the world watches women — and how women are always watching back.
In Watching Women & Girls, Danielle Pender masterfully weaves together a collection of short stories that delve into the complexities of marriage, divorce, and family dynamics. The book, a top pick in fiction, offers a unique perspective on romance, showcasing the author's ability to capture the essence of human relationships.
For fans of Huma Qureshi (Things We Do Not Tell the People We Love), Ottessa Moshfegh (My Year of Rest and Relaxation), Mieko Kawakami (MONKEY New Writing From Japan Volume 2), Sam Bett (The Beggar Student), and Mona Awad (Bunny).
