Horror master Stephen King has called Arthur Machen's Gothic horror story The Great God Pan "one of the best horror stories ever written. Maybe the best in the English language." Its influence extends from Bram Stoker's Dracula to H.P. Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror to Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. Fans of Stuart Gordon's From Beyond will be able to spot the story's vile fingerprints on that cult classic, and classicists of another sort will recognize a twisted version of Cupid and Psyche from The Golden Ass. It tells the story of Helen Vaughan — or rather, of the men whose lives she touches, in various (but always significant) ways. But more than that, it tells the story of what happens when man delves beyond his depth, heedless of what he may find in the shadowy deep. It shows how fragile are his edifices of civilization and morality when tested by forces beyond his comprehension. And it investigates these lofty matters in the most mundane way imaginable: through good old-fashioned detective work, undertaken by those alert enough to pay attention to the news of the day and do a little digging in the world's more unsavory corners. By turns suspenseful, horrifying, tragic, and moving, it is a compact classic of the form.

Five millennia of suffering. A pilgrimage steeped in terror. Will her quest bring redemption or only a false promise of salvation?
Bangor, Maine. Sara Holcomb knows what she must do. Raised within a secret order devoted to protecting humanity from a malevolent god, the dutiful seventeen-year-old prepares for a terrifying expedition through a world of nightmares. So when the time comes, she convinces three close friends to escort her on a perilous journey to an otherworldly cathedral of bone and blood.
Transported to a land of chaos and horror while they sleep, Sara wrestles with guilt at bringing people she holds dear to this hell from which they may not escape. And as vicious traps and pitiless creatures tear at their bodies and minds, the honor-bound young woman fears they won’t be strong enough to complete the mission that will preserve mankind.
Will Sara succeed in staving off annihilation?
The Nightmare Machine is the thought-provoking first book in the Soulaerium horror-thriller trilogy. If you like flawed but resolute heroes, deep themes of self-determination, and plenty of action, then you’ll love Tim White’s terrifying tale of good versus evil.

This is a radio play version of Mary Shelley's classic novel, about the scientist Victor Frankenstein who created a monster. Recent biographies of Mary Shelley have pointed to the fact that Mary Shelley's motives for writing her story differ from those the public eventually attributed to it. There is good support for this because Mary Shelley wrote a preface to the 1831 edition of her novel in which she explicitly states this. And the themes she mentions are also present in her less talked about novel, The Last Man.
This is an adaptation by Michael Henrik Wynn for the education net radio stream Historyradio.org, and he also narrates and plays the various parts.
