  As King Henry VIII's 2nd marriage partner, Anne Boleyn ruled as Queen of England from 1533 till 1536. Her marriage and execution by beheading for treason and other criminal offenses made her an essential player in the political and religious chaos that identified the start of the English Reformation. Anne was the daughter of Thomas Boleyn, first Earl of Wiltshire, and his marriage partner, Girl Elizabeth Howard. She got her education in Holland and France, mainly as a housemaid of honor to Queen Claude of France. Anne went to England in early 1522, meaning to wed her Irish cousin James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond; nevertheless, the marriage failed, and she found work as a housemaid of honor to Henry VIII's partner, Catherine of Aragon.Anne was secretly betrothed to Henry Percy, child of Henry Percy, fifth Earl of Northumberland, in early 1523, but their engagement was aborted when the Earl refused to support them. In January 1524, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey opposed the match, and Anne was returned to Hever Castle. Henry VIII started his courtship of Anne in the month of February or March 1526. She withstood his efforts to charm her, declining to follow in her sister Mary's steps and become his girlfriend. Henry quickly focused his exertions on having his marriage to Catherine annulled so that he may wed Anne. Wolsey could not encourage Pope Clement VII to annul Henry's marriage, and Anne played a part in his failure and death in the year 1529-- 30. When it ended up being apparent that Clement wouldn't cancel the marriage, Henry and his therapists, and that includes Thomas Cromwell, started the process of deteriorating the Catholic Church in England by shutting abbeys and nunneries.   The greatest controversy in the history of the US Navy of the early American Republic was the revelation that the son of the Secretary of War had seemingly plotted a bloody mutiny that would have turned the US brig Somers into a pirate ship. The plot discovered, he and his coconspirators were hastily condemned and hanged at sea. 
   
   
   
  The repercussions of those acts brought headlines, scandal, a fistfight at a cabinet meeting, a court martial, ruined lives, lost reputations, and tales of a haunted ship "bound for the devil" and lost tragically at sea with many of its crew. The "Somers affair" led to the founding of the US Naval Academy and it remains the Navy's only acknowledged mutiny in its history. The story also inspired Herman Melville's White-Jacket and Billy Budd. Others connected to the Somers included Commodore Perry, a relation and defender of the Somers's captain Mackenzie; James Fenimore Cooper, whose feud with the captain, dating back to the War of 1812, resurfaced in his reportage of the affair; and Raphael Semmes, the Somers's last captain, who later served in the Confederate Navy.

  As labor unions and movements began to form and coalesce in the 19th century, the tensions between workers and companies led to demonstrations, encounters, and even conflicts that descended into violence. Among those, none were larger than the colloquially known Battle of Blair Mountain, which pitted West Virginian miners against authorities in 1921. It represented the largest labor uprising in American history and the largest armed uprising in the country since the Civil War, and it would have lasting ramifications on unions and labor moving forward. 
  The Battle of Blair Mountain was hardly the first time fighting erupted in West Virginia over mining. Over time, coal came to be used to power other advances in industry and technology, such as plants that produced steel and electricity. By the dawn of the 20th century, it seemed that there was nothing that the country could not accomplish, and that the future was brighter than ever. But then, as always, there was the price. The vast majority of people burning coal to heat their farms and homes, and those watching skyscrapers rise over the city’s landscape, likely never stopped to think about the price thousands of miners across the country were paying for these and other conveniences. Many never knew that coal had to be dug from the ground, typically in dark mines where dust poisoned miners’ lungs, and that these men barely made enough to feed and clothe their families despite their hard days of toil. The people using the coal wanted it to be cheap, the miners wanted to earn enough money to survive, and the companies wanted to turn a profit. 
  In some ways, it seems safe to say that conflict was inevitable, but while there were numerous labor disputes during the early decades of the 20th century, few were as violent as the one that erupted in the hills of West Virginia in 1912.
