Sinossi

Windows Opened explores the fascinating history of glass windows, revealing their profound influence on architecture and interior design. From rudimentary openings to advanced glazing systems, the book traces the evolution of windows and their impact on our built environment. Windows are not merely functional components but cultural artifacts, fundamentally altering how we experience interior and exterior spaces. One intriguing fact is that the development of glassmaking techniques significantly impacted building practices across various periods, including their use in Roman villas and medieval cathedrals.

The book examines the integration of windows into architectural designs across different eras and cultures and the consequences of glazed apertures on interior environments and human behavior. By drawing from diverse sources like archaeological findings and historical documents, Windows Opened provides a chronological account of window development.

The book also touches on related fields like environmental science, examining the environmental consequences of window design in terms of energy consumption. This integrated approach, combining technological, architectural, and social perspectives, distinguishes the book, appealing to architects, historians, designers, and anyone curious about the built environment. The book begins by tracing the origins of glassmaking and its initial applications and progresses through distinct historical periods, ending with a discussion of contemporary window technology and sustainable architecture.

Readers gain insights into how window design has evolved alongside materials science and societal attitudes toward light, privacy, and ventilation. This exploration highlights the vital role of window design in shaping our built world.

American tackle football is an industry like any other. And like many industries, it sells a product that is dangerous to those who use it—or, in this case, those who play it. Daniel S. Goldberg explores the connections among traumatic brain injury, collision sports, and the industry's continuing efforts to manufacture doubt. Focusing especially on youths and adolescents—the most vulnerable population that comprises over 99% of tackle football players in the US—Goldberg addresses the ethical and social implications of their participation in tackle football.

As the tackle football industry has consistently worked to mask the health hazards, it has used a particular tool that has proved highly effective in achieving this subterfuge: the manufacture of doubt. Goldberg advocates for using public health laws as a tool for countering these efforts at obfuscation, and he outlines specific policy proposals intended to address the population health and ethical problems presented by tackle football.

The book draws on public health ethics, public health law, and the histories of occupational and public health to assess the limits of parental choice to expose their children to risks of injury. Chris Nowinski, former Harvard football player and WWE wrestler, provides a timely and insider's perspective on these critical issues in the foreword.

Discover a thrilling true story of treachery, deceit, hope and despair.
From the moment Mary, Queen of Scots set foot on English soil in 1568 until her execution at Fotheringhay Castle on 8 February 1587, she was the prisoner of her cousin, Elizabeth I. Unlike Mary's time on the Scottish throne, the dramatic events of these years – almost half her life – took place while she was a captive. But while trouble was perpetually simmering beyond her prison walls, within them Mary was constantly plotting. Only towards the end did she lose faith in returning to her homeland as rightful ruler.
This is the story of Mary's tumultuous later years, told through the many atmospheric locations where she was confined. Drawing on the latest research, including a treasure trove of recently decoded letters, Exile sheds fascinating new light on her captivity and the charged political climate of the period. Reading like a 16th-century thriller, this account of treachery, deceit, hope and despair is a penetrating and enthralling psychological portrait of one of history's endlessly fascinating queens.

"A Teenage Rhapsody 1966 to 1973" is autobiographical and describes my transition from adolescence to manhood at a time when the shackles of certain traditional social oppressions were been swept aside by optimism for a better future that previous generations were denied.
That better future started with the phenomenon called 'the teenager' who suddenly had a voice, a voice of freedoms, expression and of influence that helped create the Swinging Sixties.
I was there, yes I was there. What I was to experience growing up in the suburbs of Leeds at the time the book suggests, was that of hardship, laughter, fun, love and betrayal, juvenile violence and the explosion of alternatives that were now becoming accepted, as inevitable.
But also what I was experiencing, with the doctrine of Victorian values to keep me out of harm's way, was the freedom, without concern, to wander and explore for endless hours, the labyrinth of streets of back to back terrace houses that offered adventure around every corner.
The simplicity of life during the time of my teenage years, alongside a commonality of certain basic traditions passed down from generation to generation, that still apply and work regardless of generation. This was liberating, allowing me to develop my mind and character through trial and error at a pace of life that was less demanding and frenzied to what is to arrive in the next century, when all this description will be viewed in the format akin to a Sepia painting hanging with obscurity in a corner of a gallery.
This story had a need to be told.

Oliver's well-researched biography of Mansa Musa reads like an exotic tale of gold, glory, and adventure. During his long reign as Mali's emperor, Mansa Musa led his empire into its Golden Age; presided over a spectacular, 60,000 person, 9,000 mile pilgrimage; founded a university in Timbuktu; and helped revolutionize architecture across the Sudan. Oliver does not allow Musa's story to get bogged down in detail by seamlessly weaving a lot of history into his narrative and by supplying curious readers with an extensive description.
Many of the African ancestors of today's African-Americans came from West Africa. From 700 -- 1600 A. D., one after the other, three great, black, commercial empires dominated West Africa. They were powerful, prosperous, complex, stable -- and large. At its height, the Empire of Mali was the size of all of Western Europe.
