  Beginning in the early 1990s, Pittsburgh's South Side neighborhood began to transform from the post-industrial morass it had been suffering for the last few decades. Artists began to rent empty apartments, what were once shot-and-a-beer bars became hip dive bars and entrepreneurs found inexpensive real estate to follow their visions. It was in this landscape that the Beehive Coffeehouse began to attract a new 90s alternative crowd.
  East Carson Street was soon home to not just coffeehouses but Slacker, Dee's Cafe, Culture Shop, Club Laga and the Lava Lounge. Across a bridge, in the university community of Oakland, The Upstage, Electric Banana and another Beehive catered to the new youth culture. Cappuccinos, thrift shop culture, grunge music, local alternative bands, artists, writers and creative denizens of all stripes would soon enter the city's collective conscious. The South Side Beehive though was where the night often began, and weekends ended.

  In this 2025 interview with Justine Willis Toms, Artist and iconographer Angela Manno, creator of the Sacred Biodiversity Oracle, describes her deck of 36 cards portraying animals and plants from around the world. Manno’s luminous paintings shimmer with quiet, radical devotion to the living Earth, encouraging us to encounter other beings and ecosystems as sacred presences rather than distant “resources.” Environmental leader Bill McKibben has described her work as “Powerful reminders of the beauty and holiness of the world we are destroying, and of our duty to protect what remains.” 
  Manno says that when we look beyond our ego-centered view, we see we’re not separate from nature. Our survival, sanity, and meaning depend on recognizing the living web of life that sustains us. By tuning into the more-than-human world, we begin to heal the split fueling ecological destruction and remember a more reciprocal way of being.  
  Angela Manno is an award-winning visual artist based in New York City whose work weaves together spirituality, ecology, and contemporary iconography. A Bard College graduate, she also studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and Parsons School of Design. She has also trained in Byzantine-Russian iconography with master Vladislav Andrejev.   A smart schoolmate invited each of our final class members to write about themselves. Using some short essays I enjoyed writing, I had gathered some material for such a booklet. Further sources are my music for flute and piano I have recorded together with pianist Thomas Turner, my completing of the flute sonata BWV 1032 of J.S. Bach, and fantasies about Plato, Mozart and Kafka. 
  The description of professional growth, and the music playing which I have practiced with endurance during my entire life can motivate and benefit a broader audience.
