Synopsis

"Moscow Legends" explores the rich tapestry of Russia's capital, revealing how its architecture and cultural heritage reflect centuries of political and social transformation. The book journeys through Moscow's evolution, highlighting the city's role as a symbol of Russian power and identity.

From the grandeur of the Kremlin to the imposing structures of the Soviet era, Moscow's landscape tells a story of tsarist ambitions, ideological shifts, and the enduring traditions that have shaped its character. Discover how Moscow resisted Peter the Great's reforms and the impact of events like the Napoleonic invasion and the Bolshevik Revolution on its identity.

The book uniquely examines Moscow as a palimpsest, where each historical layer leaves an indelible mark on its buildings and monuments. By drawing on historical chronicles, architectural plans, and personal accounts, "Moscow Legends" provides fresh insights into the cultural and political forces that have shaped Moscow's urban history.

The book progresses from the city's early settlements to the present day, examining key architectural periods and exploring Moscow's efforts to reclaim its heritage after the fall of the Soviet Union.

“The Sun to me is darkAnd silent as the Moon,When she deserts the nightHid in her vacant interlunar cave.”Milton composes his last extended work as a tragedy according to the classical Unities of Time, Place and Action. Nevertheless it “never was intended for the stage” and is here declaimed by a single reader.Samson the blinded captive, in company with the Chorus of friends and countrymen, receives his visitors on their varying missions and through them his violent story is vividly recalled. Then he is summoned to give a final demonstration of God-given strength to entertain the Philistines, his captors. Famously – and of course, offstage – his performance brings the house down. There is a BIG hall filled with hundreds of people. They are just getting comfortable in their seats when the musicians walk onto the stage, carrying instruments. There are the string instruments: the violins, violas, cellos and large double basses, which are heavy to carry.

There are the brass instruments: horns, trumpets, trombones and a tuba. And there are the woodwind instruments: flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons. The percussionists walk onto the stage too, but they are not carrying anything because their instruments – drums, triangles, timpani, xylophone and bells – are already set up.

The musicians sit in their places, making a semi-circle on the stage and leaving a space in the front for the conductor. Then you can hear a long, clear note – an 'A' – from the oboe.

All the musicians in the orchestra copy that note, making sure they are all in tune.

When they are quiet and ready, the conductor walks onto the stage, carrying with him the little stick called a baton. He steps up onto the podium so that he's a bit taller, bows to the audience, and everyone claps. He turns around to face the orchestra and lifts up his baton.

Everyone is silent. All the musicians are looking at that stick, with their instruments ready.

Suddenly, down it goes and the whole orchestra starts to play! The concert has begun!

What could the supernatural world of Stranger Things have in common with the Bible? The paranormal television series Stranger Things taps into the mysterious elements that have fueled spiritual questions for millennia. The otherworldly manifestations in Hawkins, Indiana offer compelling portrayals of important spiritual truths--and many of these truths are echoed in the supernatural worldview of the Bible. For Michael Heiser, Stranger Things is the perfect marriage of his interest in popular culture and the paranormal. In The Unseen Realm, he opened the eyes of thousands, helping readers understand the supernatural worldview of the Bible. Now he turns his attention to the worldwide television phenomenon, exploring how Stranger Things relates to Christian theology and the Christian life. In The World Turned Upside Down, Heiser draws on this supernatural worldview to help us think about the story of Jesus and discover glimpses of the gospel in the Upside Down. He argues that this celebrated series helps us understand the gospel in unique and overlooked ways. The spiritual questions and crises raised by Stranger Things are addressed the same way they are in the gospel, with mystery and transcendent power.
