Summary

Marble Trade History reveals the surprising influence of marble on the development of societies across millennia. More than just a beautiful stone, marble fueled economies, inspired art, and shaped political landscapes in ancient civilizations. For example, the book explores how quarrying techniques evolved over time, driving technological advancements as societies sought to extract and transport this valuable resource. It also examines how the distribution of marble fostered trade networks and cultural exchange between different regions. The book uniquely integrates archaeological findings, historical records, and scientific analyses to offer a comprehensive understanding of the subject. By examining marble's geological origins, trade routes, and cultural significance, the narrative challenges traditional historical perspectives. The book progresses by first detailing marble's creation and extraction, then moves to an analysis of trade networks, and concludes by exploring marble's cultural impact.Readers will discover how the demand for marble influenced everything from resource management to architectural structures. By tracing the ancient trade routes and examining the material culture surrounding marble, this study provides a fresh lens through which to view the interconnectedness of ancient societies and their enduring legacies. This book offers valuable insights for anyone interested in art history, architectural history, historical economics, or the impact of material resources on human civilization.

Winner of ABC's Dancing with the Stars (Season 27)
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Bare Bones, host of the marquee morning program “The Bobby Bones Show,” comedian and dedicated philanthropist delivers an inspirational and humorous collection of stories about his biggest misses in life and how he turned them into lessons and wins.
Bobby Bones is the youngest inductee ever into the National Radio Hall of Fame alongside legends Dick Clark, Larry King, and Howard Stern. As ""the most powerful man in country music"" (Forbes), he has reached the peak of his profession and achieved his childhood dreams. Each weekday morning, more than five million fans tune in to his radio show.
But as Bobby reveals, a lot of what made him able to achieve his goals were mistakes, awkward moments, and embarrassing situations—lemons that he turned into lemonade through hard work and humility. In this eye-opening book, he’ll include ideas and motivations for finding success even when seemingly surrounded by impossible odds or tough failures. He also includes anecdotes from some of his famous friends—Andy Roddick, Chris Stapleton, Charlamagne Tha God, Charles Esten, Brooklyn Decker, Walker Hayes and Asa Hutchinson—who open up about their own missteps.
Bobby’s mantra is Fight. Grind. Repeat. A man who refuses to give up, he sees failure as something to learn from—and the recollections in this funny, smart book, full of Bobby’s brand of self-effacing humor, show how he’s become such a beloved goofball.

A spirited dive into the life and career of a performer, writer, and director who dominated twentieth-century American comedy

Mel Brooks, born Melvin Kaminsky in Brooklyn in 1926, is one of the great comic voices of the twentieth century. Having won almost every entertainment award there is, Brooks has straddled the line between outsider and insider, obedient and rebellious, throughout his career, making out-of-bounds comedy the American mainstream.

Jeremy Dauber argues that throughout Brooks's extensive body of work—from Your Show of Shows to Blazing Saddles to Young Frankenstein to Spaceballs—the comedian has seen the most success when he found a balance between his unflagging, subversive, manic energy and the constraints imposed by comedic partners, the Hollywood system, and American cultural mores. Dauber also explores how Brooks's American Jewish humor went from being solely for niche audiences to an essential part of the American mainstream, paving the way for generations of Jewish (and other) comedians to come.

    Great Zimbabwe - Stone Cities...

The rise of Great Zimbabwe was shaped by geography, economic opportunities, and social organization, allowing it to become one of Africa’s most influential civilizations. Emerging around the 9th century, the settlement developed into a thriving political and economic center by the 11th century, reaching its peak between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its growth was fueled by abundant natural resources, a strategic location, and participation in regional and international trade.
The Zimbabwean plateau, with its fertile soil and favorable climate, provided ideal conditions for agriculture. The Shona people, who founded Great Zimbabwe, cultivated sorghum and millet, which sustained the growing population. In addition to farming, cattle herding played a crucial role in the economy. Cattle were a measure of wealth and social status, serving as currency in trade and marriage negotiations. The presence of large herds further reinforced the power of the elite, who controlled access to grazing lands and water sources.
Beyond agriculture, Great Zimbabwe’s location made it a key player in long-distance trade. The city was situated between the goldfields of southern Africa and the coastal trade hubs of the Swahili city-states. Gold mining became a major economic activity, with miners extracting the metal from riverbeds and underground deposits. This gold was traded with merchants from Kilwa, Sofala, and other Swahili ports, where it was exchanged for luxury goods such as Persian ceramics, Chinese porcelain, and Indian textiles. The wealth generated from trade allowed Great Zimbabwe to expand, attracting artisans, traders, and skilled laborers.
