Sinossi

Golden Temples explores humanity's enduring fascination with adorning sacred structures with gold, examining the architecture, spiritual significance, and cultural context of these magnificent sites. These temples, such as the Harmandir Sahib, the Shwedagon Pagoda, and Kinkaku-ji, are not merely displays of wealth but physical manifestations of spiritual ideals, serving as focal points for religious communities and inspiring reverence. The book uniquely combines architectural analysis with religious and cultural studies, going beyond aesthetics to uncover deeper meanings.

Beginning with the historical context of golden temples, the book traces their origins and explores the symbolic meaning of gold across different belief systems. It then delves into the theological underpinnings of these structures, analyzing the deities or religious leaders they honor. Finally, Golden Temples examines the social and cultural impact of these sites, highlighting their role as pilgrimage destinations and centers of community life. The book draws from architectural surveys, religious texts, and historical records to present its findings in a clear and engaging manner.

In a sparkling social history, Skirts traces the shifting roles of women over the twentieth century through the era's most iconic and influential dresses.

While the story of women's liberation has often been framed by the growing acceptance of pants over the twentieth century, the most important and influential female fashions of the era featured skirts. Suffragists and soldiers marched in skirts; the heroines of the Civil Rights Movement took a stand in skirts. As women made strides towards equality in the vote, the workforce, and the world at large, their wardrobes evolved with them.

Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell's Skirts looks at the history of twentieth-century womenswear through the lens of game-changing styles like the little black dress and the Bar Suit, as well as more obscure innovations like the Taxi dress or the Pop-Over dress, which came with a matching potholder. These influential garments illuminate the times in which they were first worn—and the women who wore them—while continuing to shape contemporary fashion and even opening the door for a genderfluid future of skirts. At once an authoritative work of history and a delightfully entertaining romp through decades of fashion, Skirts charts the changing fortunes, freedoms, and aspirations of women themselves.

For the first time ever, and to help celebrate his 90th birthday in 2023, American icon Willie Nelson provides the stories behind the lyrics of 160 of his favorite songs.
From his earliest work in the 1950s to today, Willie looks back at the songs that have defined his career, from his days of earning $50 each to his biggest hits, from his less well-known songs (but incredibly meaningful to him) to his concept albums. Along the way, he also shares the stories of his guitar Trigger, his family and “family,” as well as the artists he collaborated with, including Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Dolly Parton, and many others.
Willie is disarmingly honest—what do you have to lose when you’re about to turn 90? —meditating on the nature of songwriting and finding his voice, and the themes he’s explored his whole life—relationships, infidelity, love, loss, friendship, life on the road, and particularly poignant at this juncture of his life: mortality.
Revealing, funny, whimsical, and wise, this book is an enduring tribute to Willie Nelson's legacy.
