A heart-warming journey with parents of a certain age and a son who thinks he knows best.

Of course, we love our parents. Even if they do so many things that drive us bonkers.

Like how a mother - for argument's sake, let's say mine - taps her fingernails on the car window whenever she sees a place of interest (seven taps for a regular haunt, up to twenty for somewhere fascinating). Or the way a father - let's call him Dad - practises deafness but can miraculously hear a suggestion of no ham at Christmas over the roar of cricket commentary. It might be the way your mum works herself into a tizz over a call from Azerbaijan one week and Nigeria the next. Or how your dad has an answer to everything (despite his information being forty years out of date) and 'a guy' for all fixes (if only he could find his Rolodex).

When do we stop being our parents' child and become their parent? After all, they did pretty well on their own for decades - why do they need our intervention now? And that tendency for them to drive us up the wall ... could it be because we are entering middle age and starting to recognise some of those traits in ourselves?

Over the Hill and Up the Wall is an affectionate, funny look at the frictions of taking a more active role in our elders' lives. It's a nod to every child who has waited three hours for a parent to fasten their seatbelt, and every parent whose child assumes they can't count to twenty. And, if your parents are just hitting middle age, it may well be a warning of things to come!

'Warm, witty, honest. With a healthy serving of humour, Todd Alexander has written a marvellous, touching and insightful book. You'll laugh, cry and hope your own kids love you this much. I'll be more patient with my parents after reading this' Better Reading

    Confederacy’s Most Famous Spies...

Given the necessity of spies to hide in plain sight, on some level it is perfectly sensible that women played a larger and more decisive role in espionage operations, because during the Civil War, women were not taken seriously as threats. They openly moved through areas that men in uniform could not easily penetrate, and they were able to publicly receive callers, visit prisoners, manage households, carry on the ordinary commerce of social life, and cross lines that military authorities maintained without bringing any attention upon themselves. A woman bringing food and medicine to prisoners seemed to be a humanitarian, not a security concern, and a woman maintaining the social routines of an established household was a hostess, not an intelligence coordinator. Ironically, both sides used several women as spies precisely because they drew less suspicion.
At the start of the war, the most formidable spy on either side of the conflict was a Washington widow named Rose O'Neal Greenhow. She was perfectly situated for espionage as a politically connected woman of extraordinary intelligence who had social reach and the desire to use every connection she had. In the first year of the war alone, she helped win a battle, ran a spy ring from inside her own house while under house arrest, and charmed her jailers in ways that allowed her to continue to pass intelligence from prison.
Of course, the most notorious Confederate spy is arguably the most controversial individual of the entire war. John Wilkes Booth was a member of the prominent 19th century Booth theatrical family from Maryland, and he was a well-known actor throughout much of the country by the 1860s. But Booth was also a Confederate sympathizer who dabbled in espionage, and he was increasingly outraged at the Lincoln administration. His early plans to kidnap and ransom President Lincoln, which may have had official Confederate sanction, ultimately gave way to a wide-ranging conspiracy to kill Lincoln.

During the 17th century, the Netherlands, despite having only 1.5 million people in 1600, became a global maritime and trading power. By contrast, France at the time had 20 million people, Spain had 8 million, and England had 5 million. Nevertheless, Amsterdam became one of the most important urban centers in the world and the location of the world’s first stock market, and Dutch merchant ships and pirates plied the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. The Dutch acquired colonies in the East Indies, where they seized control of the spice trade from the Portuguese, and in the West Indies, they acquired a number of islands from the Spanish (several of which are still Dutch today). They became the only Westerners who were allowed to trade with Shogunate Japan from a small island next to Nagasaki, and they settled the town that ultimately became New York City. Naturally, all of this imperialism generated enormous amounts of wealth that flowed into the Netherlands.
After the Englishman Henry Hudson, under the aegis of the Dutch East India Company, sailed by Manhattan in 1609, he returned home with good news and bad news. Like the other explorers before him, he hadn’t been able to find a water route to the Orient. He had, however, returned with maps (confiscated by the British) and beaver pelts. With that, it became clear that the region around the bay that would take Hudson’s name was a very promising new territory for trade and settlement, which would become a serious bone of contention between the Dutch and the British for the rest of the century.
Dutch colonization had begun in earnest in the region, but it would only last until England’s bloodless conquest of the Dutch possessions in 1664. Prior to that, the colony was known as New Netherland (anglicized from Nieuw Nederland), and included parts of what are now Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and New York, centered between the Delaware and Connecticut Rivers.
