Lyrical, gritty and atmospheric, Soma's stories refuse to shy away from the contradictions inherent to human experience, exploring one young person's journey through mourning, escapism, and the search for nourishment.

  Young Magic - Power may be good...

  Helen de Guerry Simpson was born in Sydney, Australia on the 1st December 1897.  As a 17 year old she was sent to France and then on to Oxford, England to complete her education.  Whilst there she founded the Oxford Women's Dramatic Society.  She was sent down in 1921 apparently for breaking regulations prohibiting men and women students from acting together. 
   
  Her early work of poems, plays, a novel and a collection of short stories found little commercial success. It was only with ‘Boomerang’ in 1932 that her success was established.  Helen continued to write across the genres and by now had become intensely interested in politics.  She was selected to run by the Liberals for the Isle of Wight parliamentary seat in the expected General Election of 39 or 40. 
   
  Sadly this coincided with the rapid onset of cancer and her health very quickly deteriorated.   
   
  Helen Simpson died in Worcestershire, England on the 14th October 1940.  She was 42. 
   
  In ‘Young Magic’ a young girl has definite supernatural abilities which she attempts to control.  Years later when she returns home and begins a relationship those abilities begin to reappear in a more sinister form.

  Although written from a child's perspective, this is not a kids book but a series of funny, poignant, and sometimes disturbing stories about life in a late 19th-century Russian-Jewish village -- the world of my grandparents. Sholem Rabinovich (1859-1916) was born in Pereiaslav, Ukraine and later immigrated to New York. His short stories about Tevye and his daughters were freely adapted into the musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Rabinovich's will contained the following injunction: "Let my name be recalled with laughter or not at all." His translator, Hannah Berman, was Irish of Lithuanian descent.Some of these stories may be too intense for younger children. (summary by Adrian Praetzellis)

  The Stolen Body

  Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific English writer of science fiction stories and novels and is frequently credited as being the father of science fiction. "The Stolen Body" tells the story of two men who are experimenting with mind over matter. On pre-arranged evenings they sit in their own rooms, two miles apart, and attempt to make themselves apparate in the room of the other. One evening, one of the men, Mr. Bessel succeeds in making himself visible to his friend. The friend rushes across town to discuss the success of the experiment  - but to his amazement, Mr. Bessel's rooms are in disarray and the man himself has disappeared. Later that evening he finds Bessel on a London street attacking passers, using his cane as a club. Mr. Bessel attacks and injures him, before continuing his reign of terror along the streets of London. Yet within a short time, Mr. Bessel has disappeared completely, and the mystery is complete? But where is he? And what has brought about this terrible change in him?
