Sinossi

In "The Philosophy of the Practical: Economic and Ethic," Benedetto Croce elucidates the intricate relationship between economic principles and ethical considerations, positing that practical actions stem from a synthesis of economic realities and ethical decisions. Written in a style that harmonizes philosophical rigor with accessible reasoning, Croce deftly navigates through the rich Italian cultural milieu of the early 20th century, situating his arguments within a historical context marked by the upheaval of modernity. His dialogic method and careful analysis invite readers to reassess their understanding of both economics and ethics, emphasizing their interconnectedness rather than treating them as isolated domains of thought. Benedetto Croce (1866-1952), a prominent Italian philosopher, art historian, and politician, emerged as a key figure in Italian intellectual life. His extensive work in aesthetics and history laid a foundation for his exploration of practical philosophy, motivating him to address the broader implications of economic actions on societal ethics. Croce's experiences as a public figure during tumultuous political changes in Italy deeply influenced his philosophical outlook, driving his examination of the ethical dimensions inherent in practical undertakings. This book is highly recommended for those interested in the interplay between philosophy and economics, as well as for scholars exploring the ethical implications of economic actions. Croce's insights remain profoundly relevant today as we navigate a world where ethical considerations increasingly shape economic policies. Engage with this work to gain a nuanced perspective on the fundamental principles that govern human actions.

When scholars study the history of the ancient Near East, several wars that had extremely brutal consequences (at least by modern standards) often stand out. Forced removal of entire populations, sieges that decimated entire cities, and wanton destruction of property were all tactics used by the various peoples of the ancient Near East against each other, but the Assyrians were the first people to make war a science. When the Assyrians are mentioned, images of war and brutality are among the first that come to mind, despite the fact that their culture prospered for nearly 2,000 years.
Like a number of ancient individuals and empires in that region, the negative perception of ancient Assyrian culture was passed down through Biblical accounts, and regardless of the accuracy of the Bible’s depiction of certain events, the Assyrians clearly played the role of adversary for the Israelites. Indeed, Assyria (Biblical Shinar) and the Assyrian people played an important role in many books of the Old Testament and are first mentioned in the book of Genesis: “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech, and Akkad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. Out of that land went forth Ashur and built Nineveh and the city Rehoboth and Kallah.” (Gen. 10:10-11). Although the Biblical accounts of the Assyrians are among the most interesting and are often corroborated with other historical sources, the Assyrians were much more than just the enemies of the Israelites and brutal thugs.

The gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles make up a two-volume work which scholars call Luke-Acts. The author is not named in either volume. According to a Church tradition, first attested by Irenaeus (c. 130 - c. 202 AD), he was the Luke named as a companion of Paul in three of the Pauline letters, but "a critical consensus emphasizes the countless contradictions between the account in Acts and the authentic Pauline letters.

    Accidental Kindness - A Doctor's...

We will all be patients sooner or later. And when we go to the doctor, when we're hurting, we tend to think in terms of cause and condemnation. We often look for relief not only from physical symptoms but also from our self-blame. We want from our doctors kindness under any of its many names: empathy, caring, compassion, humanity. We look for safety and forgiveness. But we forget that doctors, too, are often in need of forgiveness—from their patients and from themselves. No doctor enters the medical profession expecting to be unkind or to make mistakes, but because of the complexity of our current medical system and because doctors are human, they often find themselves acting much less kindly than they would like to. Drawing on his work as a primary care physician and a behavioral scientist, Michael Stein artfully examines the often conflicting goals of patients and their doctors. In those differences, Stein recognizes that kindness should not be a patient’s forbidden or unrealistic expectation. This book leaves us with new knowledge of and insights into what we might hope for, and what might go wrong, or right, in the most intimate clinical moments.

In Geniality, the second volume of The Equilibrist Series, author Erasmus Cromwell-Smith II takes us deeper into the life and mind of Professor Cromwell-Smith and his beloved Victoria. Spanning dormitory gatherings at Harvard, clandestine mentor sessions, and unexpected crossroads of separation and reunion, this narrative unveils how true genius lies not in rarified intellect but in the authenticity and warmth of our everyday gifts.
Weaving together their personal struggles—Victoria’s lifelong doubts and her quest for family and belonging, and Erasmus’s years of solitary living and fear—Geniality shows us how our own “genie in a bottle” awaits discovery. Through affectionate reenactments of heartfelt meetings with an eclectic circle of wise antiquarians, librarians, and unexpected teachers, the story reveals how genius emerges in lives both ordinary and extraordinary: a resourceful cab driver, a thoughtful attorney, or even a mishap-prone illusionist.
In a style that is both intimate and philosophical, Cromwell-Smith invites us to question our typical notions of success, perfection, and comparison. He reminds us that we all possess areas of brilliance—born from passion, discipline, and the capacity to uplift others. With vivid anecdotes and quietly profound lessons, Geniality offers a transformative view of human potential, illuminating how we can open ourselves to everyday wonders, unearth our unique genius, and use it for the betterment of ourselves and those we love.
Unlock your genius. Embrace your imperfections. Discover the quiet power of geniality.
