  Today, roses are a sign of love and luxury, but for over 30 years, they provided the symbols for two houses at war for control of England. Thousands of people died and many more were injured fighting beneath the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster, and the noble families ruling England tore each other apart in a struggle that was as bitter as it was bloody.  
  As a result, few battles in English history are as famous as Bosworth Field. Fought on August 22, 1485, it was the one which decided the outcome of that long and messy conflict. English king Richard III, who had only recently taken the throne, had superior numbers at the battle, but an army fighting under future king Henry VII proved to have the better fighters. When forces near the field under Lord Stanley sided with Henry during the battle, they surrounded and killed Richard. The last York King went down fighting, but as news of the king's death spread, his army turned and ran, and with that, Henry Tudor was now King Henry VII.  
  At the time of Flodden, England and Wales were ruled by the Tudor dynasty, founded by Henry VII in 1485. Henry had ended the seemingly endless war between the Yorkist and Lancaster factions of the House of Plantagenet when he defeated King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field on August 2, 1485, but his own claim to the throne of England was shaky and easily subject to challenge. His mother was Margaret Beaufort, a descendant of John of Gaunt, third son of King Edward III, and his father, Edmund Tutor, was the son of the Dowager Queen of England, Catherine of Valois. At the time, there were numerous other candidates with stronger claims to the throne, so to strengthen his hold he married Elizabeth of York, daughter of King Edward IV. Even so, Henry was constantly looking over his shoulder to guard against the surviving Plantagenets, and he suppressed rebellions and discovered conspiracies over most of his 12 years in power.

  2 - Most people know what the Holocaust was. They have at least a vague image of what transpired in Europe during the 1940s. Still, the details may be blurry. And even though this was clearly not the first genocide in the world, it was one of particular proportions and scale, and therefore noteworthy. At the time of The Second World War, the Holocaust, also referred to as the Shoah, was a genocide of European Jews. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its allies killed around 6 million Jews in German-occupied Europe, representing about two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population.

  From 1922 till 1991, the Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was a socialist state that covered Europe and Asia. It was in theory a federal union of different sovereign republics; but, till its closing years, its administration and economy were highly centralized.The Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, ousted the Provisional Federal government that had formerly toppled the Russian Empire's Romanov family in the October Revolution of 1917, bring to life the Soviet Union. They established the Russian Soviet Republic, the world's first socialist state with a constitution. Stress between the Bolshevik Red Army and some anti-Bolshevik forces across the previous Empire emerged into a civil war, with the White Guard being the most effective faction. The White Horror was a period of violent anti-communist repression by the White Defend Against the Bolsheviks and believed worker and peasant Bolsheviks. Through Red Horror, the Red Army extended and helped regional Bolsheviks in acquiring power, building soviets, and penalizing political challengers and defiant peasants. By 1922, the power balance had moved, and the Bolsheviks had thrived, unifying the Russian, Transcaucasian, Ukrainian, and Byelorussian republics to form the Soviet Union. After the civil war ended, Lenin's administration carried out The New Economic Policy, which led to a partial return of the free enterprise and personal property, and also a period of financial healing.Joseph Stalin rose to power after Lenin's death in the year 1924. Within the Communist Party, Stalin got rid of any political resistance to his rule and developed a command economy. As a consequence, the nation went through a period of quick industrialization and pushed collectivization, which led to great financial development but also a manufactured starvation in the year 1932-- 1933 and the growth of the Gulag labor camp system.
