Three sisters  - Anne, Marigold and Sally - daughters of the lately-deceased Vicar of St. Chytas, leave their Cornish village and move to London to try and find work. Their hope of making enough money to support themselves is harder than they thought, but soon, through their resourcefulness and good luck, each sister finds a position, each beset with difficult challenges.
