Two plays by award-winning writer James Fritz, each asking urgent, pointed and complex questions of the times we live in.
Ideal for schools, youth theatres and amateur companies to perform, these versatile and incisive plays demonstrate an innovative playwright at the top of his craft.
In Comment Is Free, a journalist forms the centre of a devastating media storm. After being staged by Old Vic New Voices in 2015, the version published here was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2016, winning both the Tinniswood and Imison Awards for Audio Drama.
Start Swimming is a play about occupation, revolution and what the future holds for today's youth. One step away from disaster, there's only one thing left to do: start swimming. First staged by the Young Vic Taking Part department, Start Swimming was also performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017.
'both a caustic critique of contemporary society's treatment of young people and an exploration of the role of language in the perpetuation and justification of the practices under critique' - Exeunt Magazine on Start Swimming
'theatrical and fun... radiates a puckishness and sense of mischief that mocks control systems even as it articulates their bleakness' - Time Out on Start Swimming
'raw and vivid... a powerful indictment of the situation in which many people find themselves' - Scotsman on Start Swimming
'a brilliant piece... It took my breath away' - Telegraph on Comment is Free

Looking back is often like looking in a mirror, all the imperfections are obvious. This is the journey of how two women look back saw their past reflections and use them to do good. How they managed to smooth out the path ahead. How they reconcile themselves with who they are and who they will be. Every path has a crossroad and finding the peace to be satisfied with the choices is part of every journey.

Stories to Share With My Partner...

An anthology of stories can be a fun thing or a scary one.
Deciding what goes into an anthology can be daunting. Too much romance and some folks may decide it is ‘too mushy’. Put too much humour in, and others will say, ‘there is no substance’. Go with more science fiction, or fantasy, or horror, and you will have some folks just not pick up the book.
Finding the perfect ‘mix’ is a challenge for sure.
‘Stories to Share with My Partner – Book 3’ presents what I hope is a good mix of stories and poetry to make everyone happy.
You have some love stories, ‘The Red Bug’ and the ‘The Coat’, for example, while science fiction is covered in ‘When the Future Arrives’ and ‘Coordinates’.
Funny stories are what I enjoy writing about, and there are few in this book.
‘So That Is When the Fight Started’ is something many can relate too and in ‘Jerk’ I take a different approach to ‘superheroes’.
I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did when I wrote them.
As always, any comments are welcome, so shoot me a quick email to info@jfnodar.com.au

When her first play, Eight, transferred from student theatre in Edinburgh to the West End and then New York, Ella Hickson was still in her early twenties. She has since built on that promise with a series of engaged and engaging dramas that pit romanticism and optimism against the realities of life as a young person in Britain.
Eight (Edinburgh Fringe, 2008), that astonishing first success, is included here: a state-of-the-nation group portrait in monologues, 'an interactive Talking Heads for 21st-century teens and twentysomethings' (Independent).
Also included is Hot Mess (Edinburgh Fringe, 2010), a dark and lyrical tale about twins born with just a single heart between them, and Precious Little Talent (Edinburgh Fringe, 2009; West End, 2011), about two young adults graduating into a world that's sold them down the river.
In Boys (HighTide Festival, Nuffield Theatre Southampton and Soho Theatre, 2012), the Class of 2011 faces a tricky transition to adulthood in a play that 'powerfully captures the mood of a generation' (Independent).
The volume also contains an introduction by the author and two short plays: the previously unpublished PMQ, part of the Coalition season at Theatre503, London, in 2010; and Gift, first seen as part of Headlong's immersive theatre production Decade in 2011.

    The Father (NHB Classic Plays)

    August Strindberg

August Strindberg's gripping psychological drama about the battle of the sexes, in a version by Mike Poulton.
Strindberg's play The Father is about a marriage wrecked by the parents' need to claim exclusive rights to their daughter's love, and to determine her future. By turns comic and deeply tragic, it shows an affable, scholarly father fall victim to a once loving wife who will stop at nothing to do what she thinks is right for her child.
The only possible outcome is a grim, yet thrilling fight to the death in circumstances of almost unbearable tension.
Written in 1887, The Father was first staged in Berlin in 1890. This English version by Mike Poulton was first staged at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, in 2006.
'Poulton is the adapter of the moment... The Father is franker, more revealing than almost any other play, an X-ray of a gifted, deranged mind' - Observer
'Poulton's terrific new adaptation is absolutely true to Strindberg's dark spirit... blows the dust off the text while capturing all its wild and idiosyncratic torment... The Father will knock your socks off' - Telegraph
    'A startling emotional roller-coaster ride' - Guardian
'Fully confirms the play's power to rivet and disturb' - The Times
