Synopsis

Powerful Grip explores the often-underestimated importance of hand and forearm strength, revealing its connection to athletic performance, injury prevention, and daily activities. It highlights that grip strength isn't just about squeezing; it involves a complex interplay of muscles, biomechanics, and neurological function. A stronger grip can enhance upper body power and endurance, offering benefits across various sports and even improving overall health indicators. This book uniquely bridges sports science, rehabilitation, and occupational therapy, providing a holistic perspective applicable to a wide audience. It begins by defining different types of grip—crush, pinch, and support—and explaining the relevant anatomy.

The book then examines grip strength's role in sports like weightlifting and tennis, its impact on preventing injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, and its influence on everyday tasks. It emphasizes the practical applications of improved grip strength, offering a comprehensive training program with exercises and techniques.

A comprehensive history charting the rise, fall, and rise again of women's soccer

Women's soccer is a game that has often been relegated to the margins in a world fixated on gender differences above passion and talent. It is a game that could attract 50,000 fans to a stadium in the 1920s, was later banned by England's Football Association grounds for being "unsuitable for females," and has emerged as a global force in the modern era with the US Women's National Team leading the charge.

A Woman's Game traces this arc of changing attitudes, increasing professionalism, and international growth. Veteran journalist Suzanne Wrack has crafted a thoroughly reported history which pushes back at centuries of boundaries while celebrating the many wonders that women's soccer has to offer.

With the enormous success of the World Cup, eighty-two million US viewers for the USWNT against Netherlands in the 2019 World Cup Final, enlightened and outspoken players like Megan Rapinoe helping raise the profile of the game across the world, and a fully professional top-tier league going from strength to strength in both the US and the UK, the time cannot be better for this in-depth look at the beautiful game.

The 1970s saw women coming into their own, working hard to create new roles at home and in sports, culture, politics, and business. It was also the start of the “fitness revolution.” At this unique intersection of feminism and athleticism, Lisa Lindahl’s game-changing entrepreneurial journey began.
She invented the first sports bra, the “Jogbra,” in 1977. It was the right product at the right time, throwing Lisa into a high-stakes world of business and power—a world for which she was not fully prepared. Unleash the Girls is the improbable story of a young artist with a disability who used her powers of creativity to solve a vexing problem and ended up leveling the playing field for girls and women across the globe—literally, unleashing the girls.
Her invention would become a feminist icon and the company she founded would change an industry. But amid the success, Lisa continued to search for meaning and the true nature of power and beauty. This is the untold story of the invention of the sports bra and how it changed the world for girls and women...and, along the way, changed Lisa, too.

Treatise of the Exalted One on...

The Tàishàng Gǎnyìng Piān (太上感應篇) is the most influential morality text in Chinese history, a succinct layperson's guide to Daoist ethics. It gives a long series of life rules, for both action and thought, listing specific good and bad deeds and the consequences they invite, with 22 categories of virtuous conduct and 155 types of misdeeds.
By distilling the Dao to practical rules and simple stories, this book made complex ideas of Daoist retribution and self-cultivation accessible to all. It is one of the standout texts combining the "Three traditions" of Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism into a single, livable whole.

It founded the literary tradition the of shànshū (善書) or "morality book," and bridges the divide between the abstract philosophy of the Dào and practical, everyday concerns.
Its opening lines set out its core premise—that blessings and punishments are not arbitrary but are drawn to a person by their own conduct, as inevitably as a shadow follows a form. To live a long and wealthy life, one must follow the rules that the spirits approve of.

Dating from the 12th century Song dynasty, the text was first brought to Western attention through the two translations included herein.
James Legge, the Oxford sinologist and populariser of Chinese classics, published it in 1891. Paul Carus, the German-American philosopher and pioneering populariser of Eastern thought, published his edition in 1906. This edition combines the two.
These translations introduced Chinese religious life to the English-speaking world. Legge viewed it as a key to understanding the evolution of Chinese ideas about retribution, while Carus presented it as a noble, popular system of ethics with universal appeal.

This is the book that for a thousand years defined what the good life was for the Chinese, and how to go about it. An essential read for anyone who wants to understand the traditional Chinese moral universe.
